Was Erwin Rommel the main cause of Germany's victories in 1941-43 in Africa.
Erwin Rommel – was a German Field Marshal, one of the most outstanding commanders of the Second World War. The ones they usually say about: "it is a pity that he was an enemy." He was one of the most liked by soldiers and a folk hero of Nazi Germany, and this was actively used for Nazi propaganda. Since 1941, the figure of Rommel (or as he was called in Africa “fox of the desert”) became the most noticeable among the generals of Wehrmacht. He was the only person who had such a stunning "jump" in the military career from Hauptmann to field marshal. His skills and professionalism was appreciated not only by his nation, but even by his opponents and enemies.

He pushed the British 8th Army to the east, it was greatly worn in Battle of Gazala, forcing Auchinleck(the British commander) to retreat to El Alamein positions on the border with Egypt. Auchinleck was soon changed on Bernard Montgomery and also the changes brought Britain total overweight in troops and new machinery in Africa. On October 23, 1942, when Rommel was in Germany for the reason of sickness, Montgomery started massive artillery bombardment which eventually finished as the Second Battle of El Alamein. Rommel immediately returned to North Africa, but could not help and stop break of the British which followed after a week of constant pressure by British infantry and tanks. On 4th of November he ordered to all of his people to retreat. Despite the eventual loss Rommel was a national hero for Nazi Germany. “Anybody who came under the spell of his personality turned into a real soldier. He seemed to know what the enemy were like and how they would react. “(Theodor Werner) This is a quote from one of the officers who served with the Desert Fox about Rommel. After the fail of anti-Hitler’s coup in 1944, one of its members, dying in tortures, named Rommel, and that determined the future of the great commander. On October 14th, Hitler sent to Rommel who was recovering from the wound two officers, giving him in honor of past services a choice - to commit a suicide and leave as a hero or a to be brought before a Public Tribunal, which in face meant an automatic death sentence . " I shall be dead in a quarter of an hour "( "The Forced Suicide of Field Marshall Rommel, 1944) - said the brave man and his wife took poison. Yet Rommel, as well as other Nazi generals, carries the share of responsibility for the world tragedy. He remained loyal to Hitler, because, being in full confidence that fulfills his military duty, took no notice of non-military consequences of Naxi activities. In this self-deception lies the tragedy
Adolf Hitler and his actions are the cause of World War II. “Those who want to live, let them fight, and those who don't want to fight in this world of eternal struggle they don't deserve to live, ” by Adolf Hitler. This is an important quote since Hitler believed in the power of war. His parents died when he was young, so he went into the army very young and fought in World War I.
When Rommel had realised he could not win at El Alamein, he sought Hitler’s permission to withdraw his troops. Hitler had refused. Rommel disobeyed and withdrew his troops anyway. By early 1943, Axis forces had retreated to Tunisia and there, outnumbered and short on resources, and caught between the British and the Americans on all sides, they surrendered and North Africa was now in control of the allies.
Erwin Rommel was born into a family that had no established military tradition joined the German military in 1910. He would enter as an officer cadet and his first assignment was to the 124th Wurttemberg Infantry Regiment. World War I broke out and Erwin Rommel would find himself serving in France, Romania, and Italy. He gained notability with his senior officers during the Battle of Caporetto for his innovative tactics used during the battle. Erwin Rommel quickly established himself as a competent leader as a lieutenant and frontline infantry officer. Unlike his fellow officers, he declined advancement to the general staff, which was common practice to remain with his men on the front line. This dedication to leading on the frontline would result in Erwin Rommel being wounded two separate times during combat.
In this essay I will be explaining three reasons on how WW2 started. The question I used for this research was; what caused WW2? The reasons that I chose was; 1. How the treaty of Versailles caused WW2, 2. How fascism caused the war and 3. How Hitler caused WW2.
World War II is argumentatively one of the largest events in war history. World War II changed that world and everyone who lived during those six years. Many people believe that Adolf Hitler was the central cause for the war, however, it is important to understand that there are many other causes. These include: Treaty of Versailles, Fascism, Hitler and the Nazi party, the Great Depression, and appeasement. It would be extremely difficult to place blame on only one specific person or event for World War II. However, a mixture of many things can and may however hold the blame for World War II. It is crucial to understand the impact that World War II left countries throughout the world, especially since only eight countries declared neutrality during this wartime. Even though only eight countries remained neutral during WWII, it does not mean that every other country in the world was heavily involved in the world. Even countries who were not heavily involved in the war, were still effected by the war itself.
The great global conflict of the Second World War was started because of the inexistent actions taken to prevent the war. The Second World War did not happen directly, but there was a series of events that led up to the horrific war. The deadly World War II had begun by the inability to enforce the Treaty of Versailles, the corrupted League of Nations, and the failed policy of appeasement. These three points are long term causes which express thee reasoning for the outbreak of war.
Field Marshal Erwin Rommel was a brilliant leader who was extremely aggressive and who failed at his goal of victory in North Africa. He would be well rewarded for his many successes by German High Command who heaped promotions and wealth on Erwin Rommel for his many aggressive victories. (Source 3.)He lost because of poor logistics, superior enemy numbers, and because his Italian allies did little to improve his odds. Rommel would have been victorious with his aggressive strategy if not for logistics, enemy reinforcements and poor Italian strength that would provide extremely little support for his forces. Rommel was an extremely aggressive commander, which was extremely rare after the slow and stagnant war of World War 1.
Josef Dietrich’s leadership of the Sixth Panzer Army at the Battle of the Bulge revealed the characteristics of an unreliable General.
World War II was one of the biggest wars known. The things people have done, the things that have happened in that war were so graphic that it has ruined the thoughts of people forever. There were so many causes of WWII; even just one would’ve been enough to make it happen. It has affected the lives of so many people, not only people that experienced it, but individuals who have looked upon it. It was such a powerful event with things to be learned. But, it all starts and ends somewhere; and to know that you need the causes and effects.
World War II took place from September 1, 1939, to September 2, 1945. It was a conflict that included almost every part of the world during the years. The Axis powers included Germany, Italy, and Japan and the Allies consisted of France, Great Britain, the United States, the Soviet Union and to some degree China. The allies consisted of Joseph Stalin, Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, Chiang Kai-shek, and Charles de Gaulle. On the other hand, the axis consisted of Adolf Hitler, Hirohito, and Mussolini. However, it brought advances in technology, the civil rights movement in the United States, and the modern women’s rights movement, and programs for exploring outer space.
The seeds of world war II lies in the instability created by world war I. particularly the instability in Germany in the economic and political conditions due to the harshness of the Versailles treaty and as a result the rise of Adolf Hitler and his Nazi party
The Battle of the Bulge is remembered as Adolf Hitler’s final effort to escape total defeat during World War II (WWII). His initial efforts were successful, however the Allied force commanders proved superior through there demonstrated adaptive and decisive decision making. These actions helped to overcome the military force and military intelligence failures during the battle. If these failures had been avoided, the Germans would have been defeated much quicker, effectively preventing the casualty numbers and damage inflicted on the Allied forces during the Western Front of WWII.
‘From the first day that he "seized power," January 30, 1933, Hitler knew that only sudden death awaited him if he failed to restore pride and empire to post-Versailles Germany.’[1] The Second World War was the deadliest battle in History. Figures estimate that over 59 million people were killed during its conflict. German leadership was under Adolf Hitler, a ruthless dictator who was the chancellor of Germany during the majority of the conflict. It is debatable that Hitler was solely responsible for the events in which lead to and occurred during the Second World War. Hitler was responsible to a large degree, however cannot be accountable for every aspect in which the
In 1933 a horrible dictator started his rise to power in Germany, and would eventually be the main cause of World War II. There were many causes of World War II, but Adolf Hitler was the main cause over all. The war lasted six long drawn out years. World War II started on September 1, 1933 and ended on May 8, 1945 with Germany’s defeat. Adolf Hitler played a key role in World War II because he started the war, his anger stemmed from his early life, he rose to power with his plans ready, and made many decisions throughout the war, but in the end his plans failed.
When Hitler and the Nazi party offered him a seat in politics, he declined and asked to command a tank division. He saw tanks as the next major player on the modern battlefield. Famous for leading from the frontline, Rommel could not accept running battles from a staff room, miles away. On the12 of February 1940, Rommel received his first field command over the 7th Panzer Division. While in command of the 7th, Rommel participated in the invasion of Poland, Belgium and France. The campaigns in Europe helped Rommel develop his employment of blitzkrieg tactics using combined arms. Although
