Since private industry was unreliable, the government had no choice but to take responsibility for trying to restore the economy. The New Deal was led by a group of social reformers who wanted a permanent solution to the unemployment epidemic. One of the many agencies was the Public Works Administration, it put thousands of people to work on a variety of construction projects. Roads, bridges and dams were repaired, new schools, libraries, hospitals, post offices and playgrounds were built. The Works Progress Administration, put nearly three million people to work.
