Why people choose religion

“Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind.” ― Albert Einstein. According to the Merriam Webster Online Dictionary, religion could be defined as, “an interest, a belief, or an activity that is very important to a person or group”. In other word a religion could mean a belief in a supernatural controlling power. In todays society there are many well renowned religions such as Christianity, Judaism and Islam. The main thing that all of these above mentioned religions have in common is that they serve as guides on how one should live their life. On the other hand many people started to question religions and their stories. Which in turn led to many individuals becoming atheist. According to the Merriam Webster

Religion is defined as “a particular response to dimensions of life considered sacred, as shaped by institutionalized traditions.” The value of having a specific religion is significant. Religion has been the foundation of life. It helps us define ourselves and making the world and life more comprehensible to us. Something that stuck to me in the reading was Emile Durkheim when he proposed that humans cannot live without organized social stuctures, and that religion is a glue that holds a society together. A specific religion helps one better understand who they truly are, and hopefully find a better path later down in life. When attending a church of a specific religion, one is more likely to interact and focus better when it is with a group of people that make it feel more like home to them. Is there a god? This is a question that all types of people regardless of their religion have been asking for hundreds of years. If there is, why did the holocaust happen? Why is North Korea in the totalitarian state they are in now? These hypothetical questions can not be answered 100% correctly, however people from different religions have different explanations as to why god/god’s let bad things happen. This begs the question, is religion a worthwhile and beneficial practice for humans? The answer to that question is yes, religion is a worthwhile and beneficial practce for humans.

Religion in all aspects is based on faith and commitment. It starts with a faith that people have in something that they have not seen. I have always wondered about the faith people show for their religion. No matter what is happening they stay strong in whatever it is that they believe in. Religion forms as a method for dealing with life and the world it makes up. It answers the questions that are beyond science and logic. It eliminates the question of "Why?", and brings the fellow believers together to cope with the community and personal problems. A religion is a system of beliefs that explains things about the Universe, answers essential philosophical questions and tells its followers how to live their lives in order to achieve the goal of that religion, whether it be pleasing the gods of the religion, acquiring salvation from a curse, punishment, ailment etc. that the religion claims people or persons have or self-betterment. I used to think it was just systems of different beliefs that guide people’s way of living. While this is true, it is more evident that religion is so much more than that. Religion has many varying objectives and reasonings, but common reasons for religious beliefs is that it is used as a guided path for guidance and comfort. The guided path has a purpose to it as well. Such as it gives people a sense of security, stability, and especially source for hope for the followers.

One of many definitions of religion is, “the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or “gods”.This is also a definition that accepted,but why so much debate.Well by examining the definition, the word “personal”.Would that mean that religion is just a personal tool and how would God be separated from something personal if the faith implies a personal relationship?Most people usually look at the google search definition that pops up the biggest but there seems to be multiple definitions.Another interesting definition of religion that sparks debate, is the definition stating that is the pursuit or interest to which someone ascribes supreme importance.So does this mean religion is just something started because someone felt that it was needed?Is there other intentions behind religion?Some say for control,separation, or money.When thinking about this it's important to have knowledge of the word itself.Theories state that

Religion is one of the oldest creations that man has had, it’s a clear representation that humankind will always seek for knowledge beyond what one can see. Depending on what part of the world you are from and what your culture has shown you is where your beliefs are held. These beliefs are what have been passed down from bloodline to bloodline and have made religion flourish in the world.

1. I would have to agree that religion rises inevitably from our apprehension of death. People tend to want to believe that there is life after death whether it be reincarnation or life in heaven. People are fearful of death and having something to believe in helps give people that hope and reassurance that everything will be okay.

Religion has been present in this world for thousands of years, providing ancient civilizations with answers to their questions and a moral code to abide by. Today, religion still serves that same purpose and more, forming and changing as time goes on. Though religions today may share some elements, they do share vastly different opinions on the soul, time, truth, and the senses, and provide answers and a way of life to those who desire it.

Religion is as old as mankind. Evidence for religion playing role in human life dates back 500000 years ago when ritual treatment of skulls took place (p2). Why has religion endured over this enormous span of human history and found in all known human societies? Because religion remains exclusively potent forces affects many different cultural parameters, moral concepts, and ideals, and influencing human thinking and behavior by offering answers on the meaning of human existence.

Religion has been and will remain a major part of the human experience. The numerous religions, throughout the years they have exited, have adapted to modern day culture. For many people, religion defines who they are and helps construct their cultural background. Judaism has been around for numerous years and its myths and rituals, like Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah, have developed over time. As a result, Judaism has prospered. Judaism is a myth of history and the recording of history in the Torah played a huge part in the evolution of the Judaism.

Religion gives people hope. Sounds like a very stupid reason, but many people feel lost and scared in such a big world. Having a seemingly organised and "logical" way of explaining it for them can comfort people. Without religion we would have no charity, no missionary work and no morals to base our lives upon. All that would be left would be a world corrupted by selfishness, hate and anarchy and every person who denies religion brings us a step closer to that dark world.
