Pre-Reading Wicked, & The Wonderful Wizard of Oz I never really liked The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The lion, scarecrow, and tin man were all characters that kind of freaked me. I think this had to do with their costumes, the lions faces creeped me out. As of Wicked I now there is a musical, which I have not seen. Overall, I am kind of excited to read the book. While Reading Wicked So the book starts out with a prologue of the witch spying on the Lion, Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Dorothy. As the story continues, Elphaba who was born with green skin grew up living a rough childhood. Elphaba green skin made her stick out and be an outcast. Elphaba had a sister named Nessarose. Elphaba attends college later with her sister Nessarose. During these years Elphaba meet Galinda who is very beautiful, at first the two didn’t like each there, but slowly their friendship grew. Elphaba also started to be mentored by Dr. Dillamond, this partnership caused Elphaba to become more passionate about animals. I am reading Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand and I am on page 300. This portion of the book is about Louie Zamperini living his WWII days in different POW camps. He has to endure beatings and inhumane conditions. In this journal I will be evaluating and predicting.
Alex is a 17 year old teenager from Canada, who is a protagonist in the Young-adult fiction book Forbidden City by William.E.Bell. Alex’s father is captured recording the “illegal” events and is arrested. Alex fights back and barely escapes with a few tapes of the protest. In many ways I am like Thelma Arnold of Lilburn, Georgia (pg. 59). The book states that Thelma had not realized that her search browser, AOL, had kept and released records of what she had searched. When her records along with others records, were released complete strangers were able to identify her and find where she lived by what she had searched. Another man’s records were released with Thelma’s and the reports showed that he had searched for things like how to kill his wife (pg. 60). I personally had no idea that there is a “big brother” out there watching what we search and look at on our electronic devices (pg. 48). Of course I had known that even the things we delete off the internet are never really deleted. Although, I feel that our
Just a mention of The Wizard of Oz acts as a rubber-band on my heart snapping me back to twinkles of emerald green and ruby red. At a young age, this movie had always been my favorite. Dorothy, a farm-girl who escapes her abnormally gray town, Kansas, is guided by the amiable Professor Marvel back home just in time for her to take a tornado ride to a colorful, magical land of buoyant little people. The good witch, Glinda, appears and advises her to make her way to the Emerald City, where the mysterious Wizard of Oz can send her back home. The Yellow Brick Road leads her on an unforgettable journey where she meets The Scarecrow, in search of a brain, the Tin Man, in need of a heart, a Lion looking for a little courage, and The Wicked Witch of the West who seeks to ruin their plans. All I ever paid any mind to when I was younger was the happy ending. Each character got what they were searching for, the Wicked Witch was killed, and Dorothy was able to click her heels and return home. The Wizard of Oz is a story of four characters searching for their heart’s desires, which they eventually find within themselves. Perhaps at first glance, The Wizard of Oz can be perceived as a children’s story. However, with profound thought the message touches on some ubiquitous themes such as deception and the flaw of human nature.
The Wizard of Oz has been a popular and symbolic film throughout our previous history. Both the book and movie have been recognised as classic literature for children and adults alike. Although they share the same concept, there are a few important differences between the novel and the film.
The Wizard of Oz does not give the Dorothy, the Tin Man, Scarecrow or the Cowardly Lion what they are seeking. He said he would grant their requests, but they must prove themselves by performing a small task; they must bring him the broom stick of the wicked witch of the west. The Wizard of Oz takes on the personality of a shapeshifter, because he changes the direction of Dorothy’s journey by sending them on another journey.
I had been wanting to read Wicked for a long time. I finally found a copy at a thrift store (must be everyone is hanging onto their copies), but had a list of other books to read first. With all of those out of the way, it was finally time to get around to Wicked. It seemed really strange at first with the weird names and the clock puppet with two *ahem* "thingies". However, once you get used to the format of it, it's really easy to get into. In all my years I never would have stopped to think about the past of the Wicked Witch of the West (or the East for that matter). Who would have thought that Glinda and the Wicked Witches were roommates at boarding school, or that the witch is so mean because her lover was killed? I sure wouldn't have thought that far into their backstories. I remember Richard Armitage saying in an interview that when he takes on a role, he writes a biography for the character to better become that person. This book takes on that ideal and really almost makes you more sympathetic to Elphaba than to Dorothy. It should be interesting to watch the movie again now that I "know" more about the characters!
Dorothy Strong wind is a farm girl who's lives in Kansas with her Uncle Henry and Aunt Em, her relatives, her house was swept up in a doorway type of thing and was sent flying through the air. The next day, when the house hits the ground, she went out of her house. She sees a huge crowd of people and, on sight, says she doesnt like this land and that it isn't for her. She just wants to go home but she's in Oz now, no one there has ever even heard of Kansas. A lot of information is is being told to her and its bad. She learned that her house landed on top of someone called the Evil Witch of the East. Which is friends with the Good Witch of the North, she said it wasnt that really big of a deal since the witch was so evil. She told them good tips to survive, Dorothy should take the silver shoes that belonged to the dead witch. They have magical connection in some way no one really knows how, and that Dorothy should go see the Wizard of Oz, who might be able to help her .
“There’s no place like home, there’s no place like home, there’s no place like home”, repeated Dorothy. A young girl trying to go back home to Kansas after a cyclone lands her and her dog, Toto, in the Land of Oz. There Dorothy meets the Scarecrow, the TinMan, and the Cowardly Lion who are all in need of something that is considered important to them; a brain, a heart, and courage. Along the way, they have to travel to Emerald City to see the Wizard of Oz, directed by the Good Witch of the North, especially for Dorothy to get back home. However, Dorothy and the gang run into problems with the Wicked Witch of the West, who wants Dorothy’s ruby slippers (which was originally the Wicked
Gregory Maguire’s novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West is a fictional representation of many problems faced by the world in the past and present. It follows the life of Elphaba, who later becomes the “Wicked Witch of the West”, a result from her life experiences as a rebel against the Wizard of Oz, her unfortunate appearance of green skin, and several other trials she’s faced. Maguire was born in Albany, New York and lost his mother in childbirth. His father was a writer, but was very ill at the time of Maguire’s birth, so he and his three older siblings had to stay with family and Maguire even spent time in an orphanage before moving back with his father and his new wife. His family
She spends her time with Zeke, Hunk, Hickory, and her dog, Toto. Dorothy’s neighbor, Elmira Gulch tells her she will take Toto away to the pound (Fraley). She decides to runaway, but tries to turn back home after talking to Professor Marvel. However, a massive tornado appears and Dorothy is knocked out by a broken glass window. Engulfed into the cyclone, she is spirited away to the Land of Oz. The house she was in landed on the Wicked Witch of the East crushing her to death. The Wicked Witch of the West sees her dead sister and becomes furious with Dorothy. Glinda the Good Witch of the North protects her and puts the special Ruby Slippers on her feet. The Wicked Witch of the West swears to get revenge on Dorothy and Toto too, then vanishes. Dorothy asks Glinda how to get back to Kansas. Glinda tells her to ask the Wonderful Wizard of Oz and to find him she must follow the Yellow Brick Road. As she begins her journey on the Road, Dorothy meets the Scarecrow who tells her that he desires to ask the Wizard for a brain. He and Dorothy travel along the road together when they encounter the Tin Man who wishes to ask the Wizard for a heart. The three of them continue on their mission when they meet the Lion who yearns for courage. All four of them finally reach their destination of Emerald City where they at last, meet the Wonderful
While she was following the yellow brick road she met up with the tin woodsman, scarecrow, and the cowardly lion and they all became great friends. They all traveled together because they were all trying to find the Wonderful Wizard of Oz. During their trip they did run into some minor complications and the main conflict was introduced when the wicked witch tried everything to stop them from getting to the Emerald City. But then one day they finally made it to the wizard and they told the wizard what they wished for and the wizard said that he couldn’t grant any wished until you get the broom of the wicked witch of the West. Finally, they achieved the Wizards wish, so they got there’s. The most exciting part of the story was when they found the Emerald City and when they each had there wish come true. So when Dorothy gets to go home, Tin man gets his heart, lion gets his courage, and last but not least the scarecrow gets a brain is when the outcome of the plot comes into place. The ending of the story was very happy because everyone got what he or she wished for.
