Every single person you meet teaches you something, with her traveling and 5 husbands she has learned quite a bit about the world. If someone acts like they are above her, she makes sure they know they aren’t. Because of this quality, she would make a good principle. The fact that this question still exists shows that the answer proves neither easy nor definitive. Women are diverse in their idea of what they want and what they desire to fulfill their needs. According to The Wife of Bath, she believes that women want mutual respect. Throughout history, women are portrayed as being the subordinate sex. Moreover, women live lives of being subservient to their male counterparts. The Wife of Bath felt the need to express the fact that there is an obvious problem with the balance of power within the marriage. Consequently, she set forth on a journey to confirm that women can be just as overbearing, domineering and cruel as men. She demanded to be heard.
The Canterbury Tales depict many characters that, although fictionally created by Geoffrey Chaucer, may give the reader the opportunity to analyze and interpret their tales as a way of determining their personalities. The Wife of Bath and her prologue accurately supports this statement, as her intentions become expounded due to her questionable actions. The Wife of Bath exhibits in her prologue that she lacks respect and gratitude towards the men she beguiles into marriage and does so by falsely claiming direction from God. She shows not only deceit towards her many husbands, but also does not possess the ability to care about others before herself.
During this time, too, as it still does when the Wife tells it, people judge by nobility rather than character. In the story, the old woman rebukes the knight thoroughly, saying things such as, “Find who is always the most virtuous, privately and publicly, and who always tries hardest to do what noble deeds he can, and consider him a nobleman” (233). In reading Wife’s story, one can almost see her listeners glancing askance at eachother, realizing that they are as guilty as the knight. Throughout time and space, one principle is true: a person can only be defined by his true character, evidenced by his actions.
As we are all aware, tales always have a moral to their stories. “The Wife of Bath’s Tale” is no exception and it, too, has a lesson to be learned. The Knight himself learns that lesson and begins viewing women as equal. The Knight starts out the story as a misogynist, raping an innocent young woman at the very beginning. Any person who is capable of raping another person has no respect toward the other. Any man who is motivated to rape a woman has a feeling of superiority over that woman. The Knight falls into the category of being an anti-feminist at the start of the tale until the Old Woman

In medieval times, women were suppressed from any power greater than males. However, the Wife of Bath shifts the controlling status to the female role; she does not believe in the hierarchy that is displayed in marriage. She believes that men should not have the greater authority in the marriage; however, she justifies,

In the Canterbury Tales, The Wife of Bath gives the reader an understanding of her stance on marriage and how she perceives the world. Throughout her five marriages, the Wife has learned a great deal. As her marriages progressed, there is a shift in power both physically and emotionally. Throughout her marriages she has a sense of authority and uses it to her advantage to gain satisfaction within her relationships. Historically the man is portrayed as the head of marriage, but the Wife of Bath shows that is not always the case.
The rights and freedom of women during the Chaucerian times were quite limited. The role of women during this time was to keep house and be a faithful wife. Men were given the luxury of leaving the house to work in the daytime and to socialize with their friends in the evening. The possibility of violence was present should a woman threaten her husband’s authority. The Wife of Bath is the antithesis of the typical medieval women. She holds an alarming power over men during a time in which men and the Church were the powerhouses. Her attitude and expressions would be looked down upon, and they would be seen as rebellious. She is a justified rebel.
Elizabeth Tudor was the illegitimate daughter of King Henry VIII and was often referred to as the Virgin Queen. Elizabeth I ruled England during a time when rulers were expected to be male. During her reign, her advisors pushed for her to make many alliances through marriage. However, she did not marry for many religious and political reasons, which when combined would have undermined her hold on her throne. This paper will examine ways in which Elizabeth I’s gender created challenges to her role as Queen, posed problems to personal choices that male rulers would have taken for granted, and how those choices led to her remaining unmarried to the end of her reign. My argument is that Elizabeth chose not to marry in order to stay in power. Her

In the Wife of Bath’s prologue and tale, it is explicitly stated that the interaction between men and women is purely physical, and that all women want total control in their relationships because women always want what they don’t have. The Wife of Bath is a living example of the ideals put forth in her tale. She is a businesswoman who has enough money to live comfortably, and, at the time of her telling her tale, she is widowed. When peering into her past, we see that she was a child bride who is forced to rely on her wits and her body

The wife of bath's tale is one in which a woman tells of her five husbands and how husbands should obey their wife to the utmost extent.
