Despite our preparation in developing our evaluation tools, there were a few challenges during the implementation stage. Many participants arrived, and either missed completing the pretest survey, or were unable to focus as the workshop had already started. A few others left the workshop early and not able to participate in the posttest. Another re-occurring theme was missing identification on the surveys. Although our group encouraged participants to write their initials or another non-identifying information, many surveys were turned in blank. In retrospection, our group should have had a box prompting initials or birth year to make it easier to understand. We created flyers and hoped we would be able to post these in local parks, community centers, coffee shops, etc. Before initiating in distributing the flyers in the local community, we asked our community partner, Ms. Zobler if she agreed with our recruitment efforts and invite outside community members. Unfortunately, she explained that per the policy of the high school, dissemination of information within the parent center could only be provided to the parents of Wilson high school students. Therefore, our Applied Projects group would be unable to target additional parents in the community. I don’t have any recollection of them ever stepping foot on my high school campus as an adolescent. As Spanish speaking immigrants, they now explain that at the time, they were intimidated by the school system and did not realize there was a way or a reason to become involved. Their disconnection not only affected my success and participation in school activities, but also affected our parent-child communication as they did not understand the high school pressures at the time. My parents culture, ethnic background, and English language ability, was a barrier in becoming involved in the school
