Assessing a community is an integral part of Community Health Nursing because it leads to an understanding of a community’s overall health status, including its strengths and weaknesses. In turn, the assessment findings can be used to influence positive change in the community and improve the population’s health. One strategy used to assess a population’s health needs is performing a windshield survey. A windshield survey is typically conducted from a moving vehicle and includes a systematic observation of the general community. This paper includes the findings of a windshield survey I completed of Heber, AZ as well as my overall impression of the survey, and personal biases that I need to consider.

A community is defined as a group of people who live in the same area, where they interact with each other and share common interests, beliefs, needs, resources, and environment (Harkness, & DeMarco, 2016, p. 189). Newark is the most populous city in the state of New Jersey, and one of the nation’s largest shipping hubs. It is the sixty-seventh most populous city in the country and has just over two hundred seventy-five thousand residents. This makes it the second most populated city in the New York metropolitan region, after New York City. It is the largest port on the Eastern Seaboard, location of several corporate headquarters, and several universities. It is a diverse city, made up of five wards containing many neighborhoods that vary greatly, from urban business and industrial districts, to quiet near-rural areas on the outskirts of the city.

The economic boundaries for the southern part of Oklahoma City can run the gambit from residents below poverty level to those that would be considered to be upper-class in their monetary value. There are neighborhoods that many would not feel comfortable after dark because there has been a rise in crime to those areas. The zoning of these homes are single story, quarter acre lots that are approximately one thousand to fifteen hundred square feet. These impoverished areas have small, older homes that are two to three bedroom homes that are unkempt and, at times, are cockroach infested. The houses are built closely side by side and do not have much open space throughout the neighborhood. Most of these homes show signs of decay related to the amount of repairs that need to be made to the home. Many of the residents are renting and cannot afford to make the necessary repairs or have landlords that are unwilling to comply with the safety of their occupants. The stores in the south part of Oklahoma City are ones that cater to a lower income, such as, Payday loans, Buy For Less, Ross, Payless shoes, Wal Mart, etc.

People are forced to move and find other dwellings. For example, an apartment building called the metro pole was recently sold for renovation. The people who reside in the building are the disabled, mentally ill or people difficult to place in other housing, for some reason or another. The building was built more than 30 years ago and has 230 two room affordable apartments; in a very convenient location near downtown Cincinnati, close to bus stops, and shopping. The building will be renovated to a 160 room lustrous hotel, so that upscale workers can be near their jobs.

The town I chose to do my windshield survey on was Jamestown, NC, 27282. I chose Jamestown because this is where I grew up and this is where my grandparents live. Performing this windshield survey will allow me to observe all the things the town of Jamestown have to offer and to see what barriers may exist for a community health nurse trying to work with the residents of Jamestown. In my opinion a windshield observation is one of the most important tasks that a community nurse has to perform since this will allow them to know what is available for their patients.

They are Wessington House Apartments II, Christian Manor Apartments, and Christian manor apartments II. Wessington House Apartments has emergency maintenance, public transportation, landscaping, trash removal and pest control provided and is located near several places to shop like the streets of Indian lake and Rivergate mall. This complex is also located two blocks from Hendersonville hospital (“Wessington House Apartments Amenities”, n.d.). Wessington house Apartments is conveniently located in a safe area that I drive by often, and they seem to provide adequate care for their tenants and offer plenty of amenities.
