We all have difficult decisions to make as we grow older, and sometimes we are lucky to make the right choices that will create our future. Men and women are always choosing what to do, what to wear or what to eat. But, while men has 99 decisions to make, women have 100 decision, including her children’s birth. Up to the present time, medicine has only developed two types of births, the natural (or vaginal) and the surgical (also known as Caesarian section) birth (Charlish). Mothers all around the world have been struggling to choose whether they will be delivering naturally or surgically. In Brazil, private hospitals and their doctors are being accused of not respecting the women’s decisions and performing a c-section against the women’s …show more content…
This makes a cesarean a dream for many women” (Khazan). In Brazil, there are two types of healthcare systems: the free and the private insurance scheme (Khazan). The free healthcare system, also known as SUS, was created by the government a few years ago for the people who were not wealthy enough to pay for a decent hospital. This healthcare system has a very “long history of discrimination”, especially against black and poorly educated people (Miley). Despite the fact that the society keeps protesting and complaining of Brazil’s public healthcare system, without it a lot of the poorly-educated and poor people who don’t have the money to pay for a good hospital bed would be dying without any help. These public hospitals, even though their efficiency can’t be compared to private ones, they still have the instruments and trained professionals to save lives. There is also the private insurance scheme, which provides “better amenities and shorter wait times, but also all of the trappings of fee-for-service medical care, in a very high price” (Khazan). And, because a c-section is more expensive than the natural birth, doctors tend to “schedule and bill as many as eight procedures a day”, instead of waiting for hours for the baby to come out naturally. According to Ivana Borges, who was the mother interviewed by Olga
The medical industrial complex (MIC) holds many influences in the care of women, especially poor marginalized women. MIC is simply a platform of the network among corporations that supply health care services and products to make money. Oparah and Bonaparte explain how the individual’s ability to pay determines the quality of care they receive (Oparah & Bonaparte, 2015, pg. 4). In relations to birthing, hospitals aren’t a place for an intimate connection between a woman that’s about to give birth and their newborns. It’s more of a time efficiency center where doctors (mainly white men) would purposely perform cesarean deliveries to not only save time, but to make a
However, Ricki Lane, the producer of the film, “The Business of being Born,” hopes that viewers will see that economically, births out of hospitals and at home is cheaper with a midwife, who will charge their patients only $4,000 for everything, including post-natal care. Whilst, a normal vaginal birth can cost up to $13,000, and a birth with multiple drugs involved, which typically leads to C-Section costs up to $35,000. However, with the American Medical association’s relationships with the hospitals and insurances, they are actually discouraging home births and midwifery, when the truth is that, statistically, it is safer and cheaper with home births and midwifes. It kind of makes you wonder just what exactly is on their agenda when it is a common practice to give births at home in both, developing and under developing countries, and has been for hundreds of years.
The author is a nurse in a level two trauma facility in a community of approximately fifty thousand people in Oregon. The community is a college-town surrounded by a large agricultural area. There is a minimal ethnic diversity within the community. The diversity present occurs mainly from internationally students and faculty from the college. There is a growing population of women who desire low interventional births in the community. The author has worked on the labor and delivery unit of the hospital for the last 14 years. The hospital is the only one in the area to offer trial of labor services to women who have previously undergone a cesarean section. The unit on average experiences around 1000 deliveries annually.
Women in Latin America were expected to adhere to extreme cultural and social traditions and there were few women who managed to escape the burden of upholding these ridiculous duties, as clearly shown in “Chronicle of a Death Foretold”. First, Latin American women were expected to uphold their honor, as well as their family's honor, through maintaining virtue and purity; secondly, women were expected to be submissive to their parents and especially their husbands; and lastly, women were expected to remain excellent homemakers.
Over the years birthing methods have changed a great deal. When technology wasn’t so advanced there was only one method of giving birth, vaginally non-medicated. However, in today’s society there are now more than one method of giving birth. In fact, there are three methods: Non-medicated vaginal delivery, medicated vaginal delivery and cesarean delivery, also known as c-section. In the cesarean delivery there is not much to prepare for before the operation, except maybe the procedure of the operation. A few things that will be discussed are: the process of cesarean delivery, reasons for this birthing method and a few reasons for why this birthing method is used. Also a question that many women have is whether or not they can vaginally
Pregnant woman had to decide whether to birth their child in a hospital with professional doctors or stay at home and to have a midwife look after them. At the beginning of 1900 88% of child births took place in hospitals (“The History Of Midwifery”); however that number slowly decreased as time went on. This is because many women began to choose natural childbirth and birth their child at home. The change could have occurred for many reasons; however the main deciding factor whether to birth the child at home or a hospital was money. Many families could not afford the medical costs to have their child delivered at a hospital.
“Today, many if not most obstetricians do not attend births: they perform fetal extractions through the vagina or through an abdominal cut.” Faith Gibson (p.37)
According to “Human Sexuality: Diversity in Contemporary America,” women and couples planning the birth of a child have decisions to make in variety of areas: place of birth, birth attendant(s), medication, preparedness classes, circumcision, breast feeding, etc. The “childbirth market” has responded to consumer concerns, so its’ important for prospective consumers to fully understand their options. With that being said, a woman has the choice to birth her child either at a hospital or at home. There are several differences when it comes to hospital births and non-hospital births.
There has been a long debate over which birthing method women should use today: natural versus medicalized. The World Health Organization defines natural birth as a vaginal birth without the use of any.. and medicalized birth as being .. However, medicalized births are becoming increasingly popular in the United States. The use of technology and medical interventions in the birthing process has increased despite the unchanged basic physiology of childbirth. One of the most common medical interventions in the birthing process is having a cesarean delivery. Despite the known risks of having a cesarean section performed, the rates of this procedure have increased much higher than the acceptable rate of 10-15% as recommended by the World Health Organization. This is due to the reason that cesarean sections are now being performed as a matter of convenience of the physician or at the request of the patient more often than being performed as a life-saving intervention. Thus making surgical and medicalized interventions a part of a common routine in the childbirth experience.
Shah then goes on to state how cesarean surgeries may be beneficial, or may not be beneficial to the mother, but are most likely unbeneficial to the newborn, unless there is a serious threat. Shah states, “ … that those born by cesarean were significantly more likely to develop chronic immune disorders.” of which he acquired from a Danish study from two million children born at full term. In contrast Dr.Shah states how many of his patients benefit from his surgeries, even though he stated previously how dangerous they were, and how he gets to save lives and bring new ones into the world. Finally, Shahs closing remarks are on how to fix the overuse of C-sections. Shah states how natural birth is the preferred way to go and that cesarean surgeries should be only for emergency use only and not for choice. In addition, Dr.Shah goes on to say how a perfect way to fix the overuse is to take the “British way” and to “...stay away from obstetricians altogether - at least until you need
Many people enjoy the idea of planning events before they happen. Whether it’s going on vacation, getting family together for the holidays or planning the arrival of a newborn child;. The natural way for a baby to be born is through the mother’s birth canal and vagina. But, sometimes vaginal birth isn’t possible. More than ever, woman are opting to schedule childbirth electively, even though there can be serious risks and implications involved. Many who choose an elective childbirth, do have a legitimate reason as to why they made that decision. Center for Disease Control and Prevention recently reported that, “cesarean deliveries reached a record high of 32.9 percent” out of all births in the United States (National Center for
As stated by Penny Simkin, April Bolding, Ann Keppler, Janelle Durham, and Janet Whalley, the authors of the number one best-selling book, Pregnancy, Childbirth, and the Newborn: The Complete Guide, “While maternity care practices are continually changing the way women are helped to give birth, childbirth itself hasn’t changed. How a women’s body functions during pregnancy, labor, birth, and the postpartum period—and what she needs during these things—hasn’t changed since the beginning of humankind.” The process of birth is one of God’s greatest miracles. Although all babies go through the same stages of conception and development while in utero, that “average gestation period is 280 days, but it can be shorter or longer by as many as 14 days. At the end of the gestation period, the fetus has reached full term and is positioned for the birth process. The process, generally referred to as labor, includes three stages” (Wittmer, Petersen, Puckett, 2013, pg. 103). However, not all babies are born through vaginal births and as technology has increased many doctors are beginning to see a trend of patients asking for elective C-sections for non-medical reasons for convenience and avoiding the pain of labor, as well as concerns about vaginal tearing, incontinence, or other complications.
Watching this video was eye opening for me, this was the first time I have ever hear about this documentary and I wish I had known about this sooner. The video was very interesting and had very good information. The film "The Business of being born" made a lot of sense and it made me wonder if my C-section was even necessary, I had always thought that I was going to have a regular birth and my family expected the same thing. My grandmother had seven kids which include 2 pairs of twins and she had natural births for all their children and she had them in her house with the help of a local midwife, she always talked about how back them having kids was a normal thing and doctors weren't needed. But now most of the births are in hospitals and with the help of a whole medical team. Some of the things that were familiar to me was that women are deciding that having their babies at hospitals is the
Not too long ago, the term Cesarean Section would strike fear into the heart's of expecting mothers because of the number of risks involved with the surgery and not to mention the ghastly scar it leaves behind. Today, however, physicians give their patients the option to go through with natural delivery or chose a natural delivery. This may be due to the increase in celebrity trends or because women are having babies later in life and advanced maternal age comes into play when making the decision. Regardless of the increase of this type of delivery, one thing remains true, it is surgery and the
Childbirth is something women should feel accomplished and in charge of the situation. A research study that relates to this is At Pains To Consent: A Narrative Inquiry Into Women's Attempts Of Natural Childbirth. This explores how women’s feelings and beliefs are disregarded by medical professionals when they are giving birth. This creates a large conflict when the “smoke clears”. Women go into pregnancy and childbirth knowing what they want, in this case it is a natural birth, and their medical professionals do otherwise without consent. Women feel empowered with their decision of a natural birth and for them to find out their wishes were not granted lead them to feel guilt and frustration. There is not enough respect of women and especially the “sick” pregnant women that decisions are made since the sexism in our society says it is okay to treat women that
