They believe drinking something cold can damage and out balance their body system. When it is suppertime, everyone joins in at the middle of a table and food is served among the most important guest there, then someone signals everyone to eat. Being Chinese-Vietnamese American, I have always seen myself as being very unique. In addition to celebrating the Western holidays such as Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s, and Valentine’s Day, my family celebrates our mixture of Chinese and Vietnamese cultures with two other big holidays: Lunar New Year and Mid-Autumn Moon Festival. Although many cultures celebrate holidays differently, one thing is always consistent in most of these celebrations: the important role of food.
Looking at the years of progression of food in china it started with Chinese imperial food originated around the Zhou Dynasty 11th century B.C. – 476 B.C. Although China’s dietetic culture developed and grew prior to the Zhou Dynasty, it truly flourished during the Zhou, Qin, and Han dynasties 1122 B.C. – 220. (www.china.org.cn/english/imperial/25995.) But when we look at the food today it has a mix of diversity of mix culture with the main ideas of the imperial dinning back in Zhou dynasty. We can look at food like curry which came from India and the Chinese culture took the spice and added to its food but also remembering the balance of sweet and sour and hot and spicy as well as tart. We can also look at the U.S.A and seeing the
One of the fabulous things about living one of the world's most multicultural cities is that every day I have the opportunity to explore new and exciting experience, especially food. Egg tart I ate in Little Portugal last week made my day, Green Curry with Coconut rice I first met as working at a Thai restaurant here was out of this world. Poutine did not taste as good as it looked, but I really like another "made in Canada" Mocha Iced Capp of Tim Hortons. And I have just found my new love: Bún Chả Hà Nội (Hereafter in this blog referred to as “Bun Cha”).
The smell and sound of fried pork sizzling and lingering in the air made all my customers’ mouths water. Their eyes staring at my homemade 餃子 Jiaozi. With freshly picked cabbage, mushrooms, and spices. Fresh cut pork and my specialty dough. After all of my customers left, I was finally done.

Vegetables especially cabbage and tofu rank second Chinese diet pork and poultry are the favorite meets in China one of the most popular Chinese dishes in America is Chop Suey. Though chop Suey originated in China it is truly an Americanized meal and staple in most Chinese restaurants even to this day.
My weekly trips to the local Chinese supermarket is a time for me to reflect on my Chinese heritage. Going to the supermarket with my parents is a normally mundane experience that I cherish. It combines my passion for food with my developing infatuation for my Chinese heritage. As a younger child, growing up Chinese American meant that I shied away from being passionately Chinese with the fear of being seen as different. The decision of studying Chinese as an additional language in high school was my first step into fully diving in to my Chinese roots. I have always had a love for language and culture, especially food, so why not my own?
Food is vital to the Chinese identity and community. The Chinese also believe food can have medicinal properties, so it is very important for the dental hygienist to be aware of these values to incorporate nutritional counseling in a culturally appropriate way. When one becomes ill in Chinese culture, it is understood to be an imbalance of yin-yang by introduction of toxins into the body. To correct the imbalance, a special diet is prescribed to rid the body of toxins. In one study by Payne and other researchers, a participant described how a paste made from golden terrapin is considered to have detoxifying properties and would be consumed for healing. The participant also described how meats like beef are seen as toxic and could throw off balance in the body. As a result, the Chinese tend to eat more carbohydrates with spices and herbs thought to have detoxifying and healing properties. Healing properties and eating for comfort are not to be confused. Americans like to eat for comfort, and while the Chinese enjoy eating for taste, they tend to consume foods to keep them healthy. The Chinese do not view food as the only method of relieving illness. They believe food will keep the body balanced, but trust Western medicine for more serious conditions like cancer.
China offers a variety of options for a person interested in trying different foods from street vendors. In the video a street vendor made sesame crackers. In the video a woman lays out a mixture and then uses a tool to flatten and smooth it. She then uses a cleaver to cut the crackers into small squares. It is considered to be a popular Chinese fast food. Another meal that looked really good was Jian Bing. Jian Bing is a breakfast dish. In the video the woman first prepared what looked like a tortilla then cracked an egg and spread it over the crepe. She then sprinkled what looked like lettuce and tomatoes on it the tortilla. When I first saw how it turned out it reminded me of an omelet. The breakfast crepe is popular in Bejing. Something
Fish also play a large role in the celebrations. The word for fish, “Yu” sounds like the words both for and abundance. The fish is usually served whole, with head and tail, which mean having a good beginning and ending for the coming year. These round dumplings which is called JiaoZi signify family reunion. Its shape look like a bag the has many gold coins inside. This dish is called Lion’s Head Meatball. They are cooked with oversized meatballs and some vegetable soup. The lion represents power and strength in Chinese culture, while the oversized meatballs symbolize family reunion. Duck symbolizes fidelity in chinese culture. Also, sweet and sour pork is popular with families hoping for a lot of grandchildren because the Cantonese word for “sour” sounds like the word for grandchild. Cakes have a special place in Chinese New year celebrations. Chinese people called them NianGow. NianGow is made up of rice flour, wheat starch, water and sugar. Their sweetness symbolizes a rich and sweet life. The family will then end the night with firecrackers.
I walked into the packed Golden Dragon Chinese Restaurant to have lunch with my colleague, a Professor of Chinese Culture and History. The Chinese waitress wearing a red cheongsam guided me to a table for two and brought me Oolong tea to drink, while I waited for my colleague.
Chinese food consists the elements of color, aroma, taste, appearance, and meaning. Many places in China have its own aroma and Chinese foods are variety. It has its own distinguish flavor. As can be seen, my favorite food sweet and sour pork is one of the famous dish. The color is bright red-orange; when the customers look at it, it makes them want to eat it. The sweetness and sourness allow the customer have bigger appetite. The sourness tends to make people to eat more when they are hungry. Moreover, the fried rice, I would like to it everyday without getting bored with it. Many people around the world also know what fried rice is and there are different ways to make it with different ingredients and
