The hardest part of adventuring out into a foreign place is leaving home. You do not know what to expect, but you trust that the experience you have gained in your life so far will guide you in the best direction. After reflecting on my experience in English 1102, I would say writing is similar to traveling to foreign places. There is a lot of preparation that is involved in traveling to your final destination, just like how there is a lot of planning for your final draft of writing. Each concept forces you take a risk, and it pushes you to express or pursue a passion. Craft is an important aspect to drawing out a map of where you want to go with your thoughts in an essay. A thesis is like the destination itinerary or a foundation of the traveling plan. The thesis is revealed in the introductory paragraph and indicates the purpose of the journey. Additionally, the body paragraphs resemble the adventure. Although the body paragraphs hold analysis, they each must relate to the thesis; or in other words, one can explore the different parts of a country, but with the intended purpose. In travel and in writing, it is imperative to remember your purpose and plan; otherwise, you or your writing will be lost.
Coming from a high school English class, English 1102 was like a foreign country. I adapted to a different kind of AP writing in high school, and it was very different than the culture of this English course. In high school, I grew a habit of writing down my thoughts in a
Before starting English 1102 I was so excited because I knew who class I wanted to take; but, his class was full. I was a very sad cookie. Then my friend Josh told me her knew a professor that was better than the one I wanted and that I would love her class. I’m glad I trusted Josh and took this class. In my English 1102 class I evolved as a writer, experienced a lot of new things, made a few mistakes, and learned from them.
I frequently find myself reminiscing about the past semester and what I have learned in just a few weeks. English 111 has introduced me to new strategies to further improve my papers such as strategies to produce ideas, planning, and methods to organize my work. One strategy I learned in English 111 was the writing process. The writing process includes four detailed steps that I used to help me write papers. The first step of the writing process would be to be prewriting, also known as the invention stage. The prewriting stage is where you produce an outline or when you write down idea that you want to talk about in your paper. I often start by making an outline, labeling my paragraphs. The next step of my prewriting process would be to write down important ideas onto note cards, especially if I am writing a research paper. After writing an outline or putting your ideas on paper the writing process suggest that you get started. The next operation of the writing process would be revision. The ins were many authors use the A.R.R.R strategy, this stands for add, rearrange, remove, and replace. This would be where you add in crucial details, rearrange the order to ensure the flow of
Over the past year I had a chance to develop a deeper understanding of what it takes to develop successful paper. Taking English 1010 was a great experience because it prepares students on becoming better writers through college life. Even though this is my second year in college I was unable to take English 1010 the first year, but taking this class truly show me what college professors are looking for when we are ask to write a successful paper. College professors expect every student to be able to evaluate each topic and be descriptive in their essay.
The biggest thing I have learned in English 1101 about writing is to write a lot and in detail. By in detail, I mean that I have to write every single thing that’s important for my essay which means to not leave anything out which could also deduct points from my essay. By writing a lot I mean to try and fill in any every idea I have. Or, try to write the full page without editing so I can edit it later and see my ideas and not a bunch of things you don’t need in your essay to try and fill the page.
English 1101 serves two purposes for me because I am not your typical college freshman. It is a general
During my time spent in the English 110 I endured a writing style of APA that was barely introduced to me in high school. The most beneficial things I learned throughout my research process this year is the use of the writing center and librarians , the online databases, and the moodle forum post allowed me not only to succeed in English 110, but will give me beneficial techniques to use in future papers I will have to write.
The primary aim of English 1101 is to prepare the student to effectively communicate, and identify or create new knowledge in various spheres of life. English 1101 assisted me to have control over the writing conventions through extensive writing practice or reading, guided by evaluations and feedbacks from my course instructor. The course contains several topics namely; effective writing processes, rhetorical organizations methods, academic writing formats and styles, critical reading skills, researching, and citing the researched sources.
In English 1101 we wrote several pieces of writing. Each piece was unique and I learned new things with everyone. My favorite piece of writing was the research paper because I could choose the topic and it was a topic I think is very interesting. Even though it was probably the hardest one to write I thought it was my best piece and I loved my topic of Genetically Engineered Babies. My least favorite was the memoir because I struggled writing it and I had trouble picking a topic. It turned out being a really good memoir but I didn’t love writing it. My strongest piece is probably my common app essay because I put everything I was into that paper. My paper was called “I’m So Much More Than a Test Score”. It was really powerful and explained
This is the second required general core course in collegelevel writing. Observing the conventions of
English 1100 also taught me to be confident in the papers I write I need to be able to be proud of the work I submit. I learned the more confident I was with each paper I wrote the higher my grade was. When writing about my first topic, “The Mistreatment of Animals in Zoo” I lacked confidence in the subject each paper I wrote I struggled with. I had no idea what to say about the topic or even how to find a reliable source. My professor taught me to pick a subject that you can relate to, that you could debate in person. I did that when I moved onto my second topic “Is College Worth the Cost.” With this topic, I immediately noticed a difference, each paper I wrote I was more confident in and could easily discuss it and discuss my opinion regarding it. Unlike my previous topic that I struggled even writing a one-page paper on discussing it. I also plan on taking away the many things grammar that English 1100 taught me. I learned that one simply cannot proofread enough and that it takes time to write a good paper.
In english 11 I wrote many different pieces, including 50+ pages in my writer's notebook. In my
My experience into English 111 not only left me anxious, it became a self-revelation. My learning capabilities were challenged because writing did not come natural and the possibility of becoming a prominent writer were going to take a lot of time, effort and hard work. In spite of not knowing what to expect, I entered into this new semester pumped up carrying an “I can do this” attitude and feeling confident.
English 101 was a challenging course. A constant stream of reading and writing lead to a demanding yet rewarding semester. The variety of texts read and written about provided a plethora of life lessons and demonstrations of values. Now at the end of the course I find myself a better student and writer. The texts themselves were not influential to my growth as a critical reader or college student. Rather, it was my own analysis of the texts that allowed me to consider other perspectives on technology use in the classroom and the importance of revision when it comes to school work.
I have been writing since I have been in Middle School. I have realized that by college it was easier for me to write down my thoughts in order for me to remember what I have said or done. Writing out my thoughts gives me a sense of recollection, knowledge, and pacification that gets me through my day. I pictured writing to be as simple as jotting down a few sentences, but as I got farther in school I realized that there is more to it than just writing sentences. English has been my most difficult subject I have ever endured, but I have somehow been managing to make excellent grades and achieving all requirements. First in the essay, I will discuss my experiences in the English life that I’ve taken so far up until college. The second part will list my struggles in creating a thesis, a work cited, and properly citing my sources used in the papers.
Of the many expectations I have of English 1101, three are very important to me: improving my vocabulary, communication skills, and the ability to enhance my writing skills. During college the most fundamental class will be English. English will help me with all subjects in my curriculum, by building better communication skills, and will help with me with everyday life. In today's world of increased communications, particularly of a digital nature, writing skills are an important aspect of expression on a personal, professional and educational level. People send written communications more frequently and quickly than ever in the form of text messages, emails and social media updates.
