Introduction
This paper focuses on two books, the picture book and realistic novel. I am hopeful while doing a critical analysis of these two books that it would help me to create an effective mini library in my future classroom. I would like to use it as a helpful tool to teach children how to compare the differences and similarities of the two genres and many more. I have chosen Corduroy as my picture book and Because of Winn-Dixie as my realistic novel to write on this written critique because it signifies the moral lessons about family importance and friendship.
According to Skolnick & Skolnick, Family in Transition there are three ways to defined a family. The first definition is people related by blood, marriage, or adoption and

She does not have any doubt to buy Corduroy even though he is missing a button on his shoulder straps. This show that Lisa is willingly accepts Corduroy with or without the missing button. The word choices are very engaging on every page. It truly allows the children to be imaginative by reading it or just by looking on the illustrations.
The mother’s reaction when she saw Corduroy missing the button abruptly dismisses him. She directly judges him that he doesn’t look new. The statement gives a huge impact of how we view things, people, and how narrow-minded we are of so many things. I know I am guilty about this and I need myself to be reminded how to be positive when in the worst situation in our life happened. We should challenge ourselves to do more and to do better act. This would allow us to show a positive outlook in life for the children. It would help the children to learn to handle emotions whether it is bad or good. It could also help us to provide the children some good examples to model ourselves to make them feel that we are all special in every way and that we are all unique. My view, at that moment Corduroy knew deep down that he wants somebody to care for him. That is why he is willing to find his missing button.
This makes sense to Corduroy to look around the departments store maybe he could find the missing button on his shoulder strap. My response on this part is that Corduroy portrays curiosity. He wants to be accepted and hoping that
Although he shifts the tone from stuffy, nostalgic to a humorous one where “He got the biggest laugh for … [juxtaposing] all his mother ever did for him with his gift of a lanyard of woven plastic that he made her at summer camp” (French), Billy Collins displays that the lanyard is vision of love and value. It’s the idea that a child doesn’t understand the material value or physical toll a mother in every sense sacrifices for her child, yet the child truly does love his mother, and so he gives her everything that’s important and valuable to him. He says, “I’m so young now, but even though my fruits are inexpensive and modest, inside I am rich in your compassion and charity for me”
In this story, told in a rhyming scheme, Joe very stubbornly refuses to go shopping with his parents. Even when his parents confront him with the “alternatives” of sending him off with a wicked witch, a giant or spending time in a haunted house with ghosts, Joe would gladly prefer to do those things. It isn’t until he is presented with one final possibility that stubborn Joe finally agrees to go shopping.
Through specialized journals focusing on book reviews, a librarian can select and develop a library’s collection. These different reviews allow a librarian to compare specific attributes of the same book to gain further information on review ratings, particular attitudes/tones, and unique facets the author of the article wishes to discuss. Due to these specific review attributes the author provides a librarian the opportunity to select wisely and objectively when purchasing books for their collection. Using several children’s book journals the following books, Amber Was Brave, Essie Was Smart, Fat Commandos, The Hickory Chair, Iris and Walter, and Bloody Jack: Being An Account of the Curious Adventures of Mary “Jacky” Faber, Ship’s Boy, will be evaluated to
She is drawn to it and eventually buys it, but she looks for a good price, and is still mindful of her budget. She was so busy worrying about how she was to feed her kids and wat to buy them she forgot to eat. This shows us how much responsibility she had, and I got a bit out of hand. Next, she goes to look at some gloves for herself, because hasn’t had a pair in a while. But while she is looking they were quite expensive, and she realized whenever she bought in the past they were very cheap. It wasn’t worth it to her, because there were other places she had to spend money. That is smart from Mrs. Sommers to think about what she is paying for, and whether it is beneficial for the price. She analyzes her situation well, and chooses not to buy the gloves, for they are
Family is a group of people who are related by blood, marriage, or adoption. This is the definition adopted by the U.S. government, and I believe it is the most accurate. Family holds a sense of commitment over time. This excludes friends, significant others, and pets. Friends may come in and out of your life, especially after moving or significant life transitions. Boyfriends and girlfriends are open to walk away once the relationship is not going as they would like since there is not the commitment of marriage. Yet, family is bound by one of the initial criteria through all stages and circumstances of life. You may have very close friends that feel like family, but the feeling along
They walked in silence until they got to the thrift store that Alex usually shopped at. It was the definition of a hole in the while, but the clothing that they got in was good quality and not that worn. The prices were also low, which you couldn’t complain about. She pushed the door open and it was blissfully empty except for the cashier.
In the modern era, there are many definitions of family. These definitions can range from a
As soon as she could see the tall business building, she rushed to it. Only then did she realize that all of the buttons on her shirt were in the wrong places. She grumbled, knowing that she is already too late for work to be able to change them now. She ran to the building, her black cardigan doing nothing against the cold wind.
A family is two or more people who consider themselves family and who assume obligations, functions, and responsibilities generally essential to healthy family life. (Barker, 1999. p.155). Families create patterns that are passed on from grandparents to parents and from parents
Yeah.” She gave her money to the man and slid the mentos in her purse. Frankie of course already had mentos, as she was always prepared for any possible situation. There was no reason not to carry an extra pack, though. Her purse contained items ranging from a small flashlight and spare batteries to a full first aid kit. She also had a spare phone charger, a spare house key, 2 packs of gum, and a coin purse that was busting at the seams, along with other miscellaneous supplies that seemed completely unnecessary to anyone but Frankie. All of this was fit carefully into a small white bag that she carried on her shoulder. The boy had yet to make his purchase, so when she stepped away from the counter, he got out his money to buy the magazine that caused his accident. Even though they had only just met, she found herself quite taken with him. It wasn’t his appearance or how he was dressed that she found interesting, it was the way he seemed to interact with the world. He felt quite distant, like he wasn’t really there, but also extremely aware. She watched him pay the cashier and shove the change in his pocket and grab the damaged magazine. It didn’t look like something someone like him would read, and he didn’t look particularly interested in it either, even after being so absorbed in it that he ran into her. When he saw she was still standing in the shop, he looked
There are many ways to define the word family. ‘For some it is easy to define what the family should be, namely a heterosexual conjugal unit based on marriage and co-residence.’ (Silva and Smart, 2004) Which follows on and connects with the definition that a family is "a fundamental social group in society typically consisting of one or two parents and their children." (Oxford Dictionaries / English 2017) However, in today’s society, this definition excludes many other modern family structures. Another definition of family is ‘two or more people who share goals and values, have long-term commitments to one another and reside usually in the same dwelling.’
Bridget's tears halted once again when she ripped open a package of more shoes, scarves, and shirts. Her sadness temporarily faded when she thought about adding her new clothes into her closet, and showing her friends the many flashy items she owned. Shopping was a sort of drug for Bridget. It distracted her from her daily problems, allowed her to experience a rush of euphoria, and she couldn't get enough of it.
Lillian understood why her mother needed to return the shirt; she just couldn’t understand why she’d bought it in the first place. The collar of the red shirt was embellished with wooden beads and felt flowers while the hem was laced with a golden thread. In truth, Lillian wouldn’t have been surprised if someone had arbitrarily put together miscellaneous items they found
Taking stock, he noticed she wore two of the prettiest, crystalline blue eyes that he had ever seen. He had caught them briefly when she looked up his way while examining some trinkets on a nearby rack. The store manager, Rick Hawkins, had liked to keep what he called “pocket items” and some other cheap, frail plastic children’s toys near the counter. He hoped that by placing these poorly made and quickly disposed of novelties in direct view of the younger clientele it would entice kids into asking—no begging—their parents into buy them something while they stood in line.
Does this fit feel alright? Dennis asked the little boy, he nodded. Thank you, said his mother, come on Michael lets go the check out. Dennis got up and headed back to his post. “Dennis to the manager’s office,” came on the shoes store intercom. Dennis sighed and headed to Mr. Bleaks office. Good evening Mr. Bleak, Dennis greeted his boss. Hello Dennis, take a seat. I called you in here to let to tell you now that today is your last day working here; I’m going to have to let you go. What, why?! Because you are stealing shoes, said Mr. Bleak. No, I never stolen anything, I swear. No, use lying Dennis, you’re lucky I’m not calling the cops. Just collect your things and get out of my store. I can’t believe this, Dennis muttered on his way
