Total war is a military conflict in which each of the participating nations mobilize all available resources in order to completely extinguish another nation’s ability to engage in warfare. The utilization of the governments, economies and populations of the participating nations in WW1 reached an extent never seen before in history. A war economy was adopted throughout Britain, France and Germany. The mass manufacturing of weapons, munitions and other war material was prioritized, and with the mass leap of technology, it indeed affected the outcome and the nature of WW1.
As in the wars prior to WW1, artillery was a key component and a prerequisite for battlefield success. Artillery proved to be a crucial aspect and the number one threat to infantry and tanks alike. Artillery came in several light, medium and heavy forms. Furthermore, field guns served in the direct line of sight role whilst mortars and howitzers allowed for indirect fire support. Howitzers were established in order to be used under cover or against hidden targets. They fired shells on a high trajectory through a short barrel and were considered the best gun to employ against fortifications. The mortar was also similar in

Germany was the first to make large scale use of poison gas as a weapon. On 31 January 1915 18,000 artillery shells containing liquid xylyl bromide tear gas (known as T-Stoff) were fired on Russian positions on the Rawka River, west of Warsaw during the Battle of Bolimov. Instead of vaporizing the chemical froze, completely failing to have an impact. Unlike most weapons of the time it was possible to develop countermeasures to the various gas agents and hence in the latter stages of warfare and with the increased utilization of gas, the effectiveness was
World War I trench warfare is no different. Both Allies and Axis used artillery constantly to bombard enemy position or cover infantry advances. There are two types of artillery. The first type of artillery is known as the field gun. Field guns were meant to be fired directly at an enemy position at a relatively flat trajectory (“New Weapons”). Perhaps the most successful field gun ever created was the French 75mm field gun known as "the 75". The field gun features a 75mm bore that can fire 75mm caliber rounds and its revolutionary hydraulic buffer that prevents the artillery from moving after it is fired. This hydraulic buffer is similar to the automobile's shock absorber, absorbing the recoil of the gun
The First World War fought from 1914 to 1918 was one of the largest and most brutal catastrophes fought in the 20th century. With nearly the entire European continent fighting a barbaric and everlasting war, the U.S. had eventually to get involved in order to reinitiate stability to Europe. Ultimately, the U.S. taking involvement in World War I had a profound political, economic, and social impact on the country. It increased government powers and solidified the nation’s leadership role in foreign politics. The U.S. emerged as the world 's greatest industrial power with increasing financial opportunities for minorities. At the same time anti-immigrant and anti- communist sentiments arose among many American citizens. And finally the war contributed to the massive migration of African Americans from the Southern to Northern states looking for employment and freedom and, first time allowed women to participate in jobs that were traditionally reserved for men.
World War One, also known as the Great War, broke out across the world in August of 1914. European leaders expected it to be a short war, assuring their citizens that a resolution would occur before the start of the New Year (Stokstad). Those leaders could not have been any more wrong, because World War One lasted until November 11, 1918. The war goes down as one of the most destructive wars in all of history. An estimated ten million people lost their lives due to war efforts such as trench warfare and overall technological advances in weaponry. Because of the duration of the war, countries endorsed food rations and propaganda attacks on ordinary citizens to manage the war effort (web). The point is that the war was brutal on all people,
The First World War of 1914-1918, also known as the Great War, was the first total war in history. What began as a European struggle over the balance of power between the triple alliance of France, Britain and Russia on one side and the central powers of Germany and Austria-Hungary on the other, soon became a global conflict that involved the imperial powers of Europe, their colonies and lands such as the Ottoman Empire, Japan and the United States. Although the sheer number of countries involved in the conflict is enough to describe the First World War as a mass war, what makes it total is the fact that it was waged not only against the enemy’s armies, but also against the civilian
The first world war was one of the most brutal and remorseless events in history; ‘the global conflict that defined a century’. Over nine million soldiers and a large amount of innocent civilians lost their lives. Empires crumbled, revolution engulfed Russia and America rose to become a dominant world power. Huge armies deployed new weapons of devastating effect from rifles and pistols to torpedoes and flame throwers. These weapons were used not only in the trenches but by tanks too. This was an advantage to those who were able to access such machinery as they could easily launch bullets and missiles at nearby enemy bases. The downfall of the tank was the fact it was unable to cross the trenches. Tanks were not the only pieces of equipment that could access this machinery but U boats and planes too. The British carried ‘bolt action rifles’ in which fired 15 rounds per minute at a minimum range of 1,400 metres away. This allowed the British to take out foes at a far greater range. By using machinery in which rules out the need for getting up close to the enemy was a great advantage during world war one. Soldiers ran from trench to trench attacking with all that they had. This resulted in a massacre as the soldiers running toward the trenches were shot down. Machinery such as machine guns and heavy artillery were the weapons used in the trenches. In modern day society, machine guns are the main weapons used by soldiers. This wasn’t the case around the 1914s. They took four
World War I (WWI) had many main events from 1914 – 1918. It was known as the Great War and the war to end all wars. It also introduced us to many new technology to including Barbed wire, machine guns, artillery, poison gas, airships, aircraft 's, new naval vessels and tanks. All these wartime machines and equipment resulted in unprecedented carnage and destruction, with more than 9 million soldiers killed by the end of the war. This First World War or the Great War, was a global war centered in Europe. This global conflict pitted 2 groups against each other “The Allied Powers” and “The Central Powers”. The Allied Powers was made up of Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy and The United States. Important people that were known for the Allied Powers were Herbert Henry Asquith, Prime Minister (UK), Woodrow Wilson (U.S. President), Aristide Briand, Prime Minister (France), and Prime Minister (France). The Central Powers was made up of Germany, the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, the Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria. Important people that were known for the Central Powers were Prince Max Von Baden, Chancellor (Germany), Heinrich Von Clam-Martinic, and Prime Minister (Austria).
Throughout World War I technology changed the way war was fought and new defensives were created every day to protect each respective side. Weapons were one of the major technological items that changed the course of the war from soldiers fighting style from trench warfare to the first line of defense. Artillery was a new piece of technology that impacted World War I especially during trench warfare. Artillery was considered to be the number one threat to infantry due to its high explosive power. Artillery’s main use was to counter trench warfare to due to it shot at a trajectory in order to shoot from a high angle. Artillery was the most impactful technology of World War I due to its high success rate for counter attacks as well as its threat
World War I, also known as the First World War, was a global war originating in Europe that lasted from July of 1914 to November of 1918. In the war, technology was just beginning to advance enough to have a considerable effect on the war. The technology developed for World War 1 was mainly offensive and this caused the war to be battled in trenches. Key technological developments include but are not limited to-the machine gun, poison gas and the creation of tanks. These innovations with new advancements led to, on both sides, a war that no one had yet to see earning it the name The Great War.
artillery was an essential asset used to destroy enemy trenches, knock out other artillery batteries,
Artillery shells could also fire gas into enemy lines this was a major factor in Germany. Another way artillery was significant was during “World war 1 was a period in time in which firepower technology got far ahead of mobility technology, and the result was trench warfare”(Tucker 133). Artillery may have not been very transportable but this contributed to trench warfare as it was stationary and very powerful. Artillery was the ideal weapon on taking out tanks as artillery weapons would be set up in the trenches and tanks would come to try to take over the enemy lines and artillery guns could blast the tanks with its powerful shots. Artillery was a piece of technology during ww1 which was highly needed and lead to different military tactics such as trench
During any war, there will alwaAys be alliances made which stick even after the war has been dissolved. Postwar foreign policy after wars such as World War I and World War II was complicated and both had their similarities and differences from each other. World War I (WWI) strengthened our international relations with many countries, It also deteriorated some relations as well and set the stage for America becoming a great power. World War II (WWII) had some of the same effects, solidating our bond with the Allies and breaking others, but also it had many differences.
The rifle was the most common weapon in the war, almost every soldier had one. The rifle most commonly used, at least by British soldiers, was the Lee Enfield, a rifle which could fire up to 2 kilometres at 15 shots per minute, or 1 shot every 4 seconds, it was preferred because it could reload quickly. The German army used a rather similar rifle known as the Mauserk98, which was very similar. Another common weapon in WWI was the pistol, it was a small, handheld gun used for fighting
Nationalism started a small war between Serbia and Austria-Hungary. Through alliances, imperialism, and militarism more countries joined creating a bigger war called World War One. A total war is a war which mobilizes the whole population and all available resources, while also covering a wide geographic area. World War One had a wide geographic area, the whole population was mobilized, and the government controlled all aspects of daily life/economy, therefore, World War One was a total war.
110,000 tons of chemical weapons were used. The first type of weapon used in war was chlorine gas. The Germans were the first to introduce the gas. In order for the gas to work they had to wait tens days before the wind was right for them to launch it in. They launched it April 22nd, 1915. It killed everything allowing the Germans a huge gain. This allowed them to be able to be on the border of Ypres within an hour. Then, in September it was Britain’s turn for pay back. During the battle of Loos Britain unleashed their first gas attack. This was one of Britain’s biggest attacks. Throughout the war more than 1 million soldiers were exposed to chemical weapons. Roughly 90,000 died from the horrid
What is meant by the concept of Total War? Total war is best described as a country’s 100% effort. All means of production and accomplishment are geared towards what is the best way to win a war.
