YG is known for performing unique Korean Pop/Hip Hop music, mixing the genres. Given YG’s unique music style and fashion taste, it has accumulated a group of loyal fans.

Expansion of Hallyu is significant in the Asian area and even within the global market particularly with recognition of K-POP growing constantly in overseas market. Along with other Hallyu products such as the Korean TV dramas and movies, K-pop music has been one of the important part of this Hallyu wave in overseas market, especially in Chinese and Japanese market.

Nowadays, Social Medias are vital in the music industry and it has been restructuring the way entertainment companies and artists communicate with their fan base. Now Youtube, Facebook and Twitter make it easier for K-pop bands to reach a wider audience and those fans are turning to the same social networking tools to proclaim their loyalty. With the Internet, tickets sell out within minutes and fans can share their passions through social media, which can also influence other people.
The Korean music industry regrouped by focusing more on digital distribution and touring. As the use of social networks spread globally in the last few years, K-pop bands began to gain more traction abroad.
With the proliferation of YouTube, smartphones, and mobile internet, Korean music companies have been displaying strong performances on the global stage. Thus, they are turning their eyes away from Korea
The music industry is made of companies which produce and sell music. The music industry as we know it was solidified in the mid-twentieth century, where records succeeded sheet music as the primary product in the music business. Record companies were established, but did not last very long until the late 1980s when the “Big Six”, a group of multinational corporations consisting of Sony, MCA, WEA, Polygram, EMI, and BMG controlled most of the market. Initially there were five corporations (CBS and RCA (both now belonging to Sony), WEA, EMI, and Polygram) that had emerged in 1978 to own 60 per cent of the market. (Wallis and Malm, 1984, p. 81)

As of 2014, America had the world’s largest music market with a retail value of almost 5,000.5 million dollars, and it continues to grow.
Social media has had a profound effect on the likability of certain genres and the artists that create music in those genres. The way in which we discover music today has drastically changed. Prior to the existence and popularity of social media, listeners listened to and discovered new music through the radio, album purchases, or from word of mouth. In recent years, three firms have taken control of over 75 percent of the music industry: Universal Music Group, Sony Music, and Warner Music Group (McIntosh & Pavlik, 2004, p. 99). Because these record labels do not profit from music styles that lacks strong mass market appeal, styles tend to fit well-established genres. This results in formulaic and homogeneous music.

But there is a reason for this, cause in Korea once one has auditioned and have been accepted into one of these companies they must be trained in singing, dancing, music composition, and acting. They also have to take lessons in English, Japanese, and Mandarin. Or, if your one of the non- Korean natives in a group you must take Korean lessons. Over the past decade, the use of CDs has been replaced with online streaming and retailing. This has eliminated much of the record companies revenues as they were used to making most of their profit off of distribution and promotion of physical copies of artists albums (Niemen). This has caused for a major shift and remodeling of major players in the music industries business models. Companies such Sony, Warner Music Group and Universal Music Group have started to completely rethink the way they conduct business (Forbes). In the past record labels were not only responsible for production, distribution and promotion of an artist and his/her music, but they also acted as a bank (Forbes), funding the artists tours and recording sessions. Recently, these music giants have been moving towards becoming more of a modular network organization. What this means is that they are less occupied with the nitty gritty, and more focused on what they do best which is distribution and promotion. This also allows for more freedom of creativity for the artist as well as fairer split of profits (Forbes). This adaption of new business models clearly shows the versatility of the music industry in adapting to new times and technologies.
Musicians are one of many aspects of entertainment that are impacted by the media. “Possibly the biggest shift in music has come through social media through an increased level of interaction between musicians and fans” (Evans). Now that we have social media it benefits the artist and the fans. The artist is able to broadcast, promote and share things that were not possible before. An example of this would be the artist can share their latest news, achievements or plans with their fans.The fans are able to keep up with the artist, be more interactive with them and communicate with them better. An example of this would be they can message , leave comments, or watch videos of the celebrity. These are just some of the ways that the media has impacted the music industry.
The internet is an important tool for these singers to reach out to his or her fans. Websites such as Facebook and Twitter have been used as a way to do so. The internet has been used as a haven for illegal activities as well, one of them is piracy. When one mentions the internet, the first matter that comes to mind is piracy. The number of cases of online piracy has skyrocketed in the last few years. Websites such as The Pirate Bay and Mininova have been instrumental in this uprising of universal outcry for changes in copyright laws. Of all the types of media, books and music have been two of the most pirated. Full music albums are available to download for free on websites and eBooks have been pirated in large quantities. This movement of online piracy has influenced the population. Buying music is unheard of and ridiculed, while books are now downloaded more than they are bought in stores. This trend of electronic downloading instead of the old fashioned buying from a store has influenced our society immensely. Not only does it make books and music more affordable, it also makes it much more convenient for users, as they can gain access to full albums of music and books from the comfort of their homes. However, this trend of piracy also has its downside. Lesser known artists and authors whom need the sales from their books and music to make a living are now unable to because their works are publicly available for free on the internet.
