Experience means nothing to farmers Three kids began playing Little League baseball on the same team at the age of eight years old. Each one of them played in the league until they were each twelve years old. Since all of them now have five years of experience, which one do you think is the all-star? It does seem like some important information is missing. For instance, how can you tell who has better skills based on the number of years playing the game? After playing for five years in the league, none of them may be an all-star. Perhaps the kid who started playing at age 11 is a better player than the three who have five years of experience. While this story’s message is easy to grasp, you could be talking about yourself and/or Ag Spectrum
This selection convention is typical throughout the world and is how the best of the best eventually make their way into professional sports such as hockey, soccer, and the Olympics. The idea that a person’s individual merit is the sole reason behind his or her success is challenged. An interesting connection is realized in the birth month of star hockey players; it is discovered that more hockey players have birth months in January, February, and March than in any other month of the year. The reason is found in the January 1st cutoff date for acceptance into age classed hockey leagues. The advantage of being 9-11 months older than other players yields advantages that build upon themselves as players’ skills progress. Similar correlations were found in other types of sports and in academics. Hard work, consistency, and motivation were undoubtedly involved in the successes of those analyzed, however, attention is drawn to a very important notion; in order to find out what makes a person successful, you also need to know where they come from.
With each throw to home plate he felt a little bit more pain. Instead of resting him Mark Hyman sent his son out to pitch the very next game. Stories like these are not uncommon with anyone who child has played on any team. Over the last few years, adults have taken over kid’s sports. Many children under the age fifteen required medical treatment for sports injuries and nearly half of them are only the result of simple overuse. The quest to turn children into superstar’s are taken a toll on their
This seemingly small advantage in most cases tends to give the older kids an advantage over the younger players because they get more playing time, get placed on better teams, receive better coaching, and in turn become more skilled hockey players. Obviously those who go on to succeed must have innate talent, but that is not the primary factor deciding whether they succeed or fail at the sport. The primary factor in how good they become at hockey is the better opportunities they received because of their age. When applying Gladwell’s Outlier theory “The outliers in a particular field reached their lofty status through a combination of ability, opportunity, and utterly arbitrary advantage” (37) the birth date of the hockey players serves a crucial role and is just an arbitrary advantage. The coaches should not place the same expectations on the younger players or the younger players should be put in a younger league more suitable for them so they too can be given a chance to become great like those born in the earlier months. Since this doesn’t happen though those born earlier are much more likely to become great, which provides a solid backing of Gladwell’s Outlier theory.
This is an example of an elite NBA team looking for talent overseas because its executives believe those players are harder working and better skilled than their American counterparts. This is what needs to be changed at the AAU level; our players need to start being viewed as more skilled and just as unselfish as the European players.
The new approach helped the Oakland A’s succeed because it was ethical. Billy Beane used numbers to evaluate the players. Numbers matter but can be misleading. By looking closely and understanding what he was doing Billy made good decisions based on numbers. The old approach was unethical because it misjudged the players. In the “old fashion statistics of the players some key important factors were left out. For instance the old statistics did not mention the number of walks a batter earned. This left out information misleads coach’s judgments and resulted in scouts undervaluing players.
America’s baseball diamonds, soccer fields, hockey rinks, and basketball courts have never been so busy with children. The number of kids involved in an organized sport is not what is so groundbreaking. It’s the way in which children are playing or how their parents are arranging for them to play that may be cause for concern (Ferguson). Much controversy surrounds youth sports with the biggest disagreements coming over parental involvement and the intensity of play. Although there are many benefits for team participation, there is a growing fear that the negatives are starting to outweigh the positives.
Baseball statistics are meant to be a representation of a player’s talent. Since baseball’s inception around the mid-19th century, statistics have been used to interpret the talent level of any given player, however, the statistics that have been traditionally used to define talent are often times misleading. At a fundamental level, baseball, like any game, is about winning. To win games, teams have to score runs; to score runs, players have to get on base any way they can. All the while, the pitcher and the defense are supposed to prevent runs from scoring. As simplistic as this view sounds, the statistics being used to evaluate individual players were extremely flawed. In an attempt to develop more
This shows these athletes would do better off with the professional help of the NBA. A major part of my action plan is to provide these athletes with the option to either attend a college or university for one year and then enter into the NBA draft or become drafted straight out of high school with the understanding that they will have to play for that specific teams developmental league for one year before joining the actually team itself. Ultimately, this plan would allow athletes to receive the financial benefits needed in the short term while still developing and preparing themselves for years in the NBA.
Lastly, to compare Negro League players to Major League players, perhaps the best method of comparison is direct comparisons through their statistics. To do that, one must take the numbers put up by each man, respectively, and compare them
For centuries, men and women were never given equal opportunities, creating a glass ceiling in the United States, and around the world. The glass ceiling represents the invisible barrier in the professional world between men and women, or minorities. It holds those back from being able to reach their full potential, which is also presented in Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers, where he describes Canadian hockey players, and those who are born in the first few months of the year are often more successful. The cut off date for Canadian hockey is January 1ts, making the children born around that date the oldest (Outliers). These children are often chosen for more advanced leagues, giving them better coaching and more opportunities. The enhanced coaching
In Fargo we had enough kids to make 2 teams. We split them based on their age group. Team 1 was made up of seniors and juniors. Team 2 was made up of sophomores and freshman. Each team had 3 games this day. Team 1 played very well they made good choices and made big plays. They ended the day with a 2-1 record. Team 2 went 3-0 with some magnificent play from those young guys. Unfortunately, they did not make it to
The first thing a coach at the youth level evaluates is the physical ability of the players. Timed sprints, agility drills, and ball handling (catching and throwing) drills give a coach a baseline of data to work from after the first practice. Coach Trimble has a staff that can handle the collection of most of this type of data. A coach at the lower levels may not have any assistant coaches and needs to be prepared to be the sole collector of raw data and anecdotal notes on each player. If at all possible, youth coaches should try to illicit help from parents in collecting data.
The database keeps track of the history of all of the teams that each player has played on and all of the players who have played on each team.
The second section contains information on the relative potential impact of every player. This must be more noteworthy than
Sabermetrics is a systematic statistical approach in evaluating teams and players. Based on this science it was found out that this basis for judging the performance of the player should be on-base percentage. The Oakland A’s recruitment would prioritize college players rather than high school players. This was due to the fact that college players have already played more games against better competition. Beane was convinced with the fact that “a young player” is not what he looks like, or what he might become, but what he has done. The bottom line is what the player has produced in college. Beane and DePodesta believed that they could forecast future performance of college players more efficiently than high school ones.
