Psychology of Communication and Relationship Management
Personal Communication Profile
Communication is something we do without thinking as it comes naturally. As babies we communicate through sign language. Our hands go out to pick a baby up, the baby soon learns that this language of communication gets results. Crying is another form of attention. As babies age they also learn to talk. They soon learn that saying the correct words along with body language, gets them what they want. Communicating with people I find is my strongest asset and using verbal and nonverbal communication can be testing, but beneficial used in the correct way. Currie (2007) states Effective Verbal Communication is important when building relationships

Ince (2010) mentions, a head injury can damage a part of the brain responsible for memory. Severe head trauma can cause permanent memory loss and confusion. A person may even need to learn basis mathematics and writing skills again (pg 1).
Concentration and listening constitute a positive conversational base. The most important part of communication is listening. The skill deficit the writer has in communication is concentration. I can overcome this by taking my time documenting data in clearer detail and not rushing. Remembering information is not a strong point within my communication. I have adopted a system where keeping notes and documents is a major help to me. I have a strong ability in communicating with people, talking, and getting them to feel comfortable and relaxed while visiting and interviewing them. Readings in the Course Documents state, Interpersonal communication is the primary way we build, refine and transform relationships (pg 32). It is important to make friendly eye contact while using hand and facial gestures. This gives the person confidence and trust within you. Caution has to be taken when dealing with different cultures. European customs may not have the same
This brain injury also includes the “production of harmful chemicals called free radicals, inflammation, impaired transport of molecules within nerve cells, and imbalances of key ions needed for nerve function” (Menon 1). Memory is also effected by a concussion. Short term memory is often “individuals complain that they cannot remember something they just saw, or things that were just said. This is the most common type of memory problem” (French 1). Long term memory impact is viewed as “individuals who suffer a head injury are able to remember things that occurred in the past, but may struggle with things that happened recently” (French 1). When a concussion happens it is mostly common to only be effective to short term memory. Concussions not only potentially bruise your brain but produces harmful chemicals. A concussion causes “injury to the nerves in the scalp or larger nerves in the face and upper neck from the trauma can result in head discomfort” (Zasler 1). Head discomfort includes piercing headaches and lasting head pain. The nervous system is effected in negative ways because at the moment of impact to the brain, the nerve tissues are stretched and teared causing great pain.
Communication is an expressions of ones thoughts...To convey what one person is trying to say to
People can communicate in many different ways, verbal (talking), Written (email, memo, posters), body language/gestures (the way they react when been given information), their facial expression, eye contact, sigh language and behavior. People communicate to one another on a day to day basis. People may communicate to each other for different reasons such as: Creating a relationship, keeping a stable relationship, 'chit chat', giving/receiving information or expressing ideas, thoughts or concerns.
Communication isn’t just about talking. There are so many different elements to communicating in society. How a person gestures, the tone in an individual’s voice, an expression on a person’s face, how a person listens is all a part of communicating. As we all know, in order to communicate with one another we must be able to listen. I think in society people think that communication is all about speaking but in reality it is just a little piece to a bigger picture. In today’s society, listening seems to be a skill that is being neglected. Even though it is basically the first communication skill that we are exposed to, we have pushed it aside and chose speaking to dominate our lives. Researchers have discovered that fetuses can process incoming sounds during the last trimester of pregnancy, and that by 12 months children have learned sounds of and rules of their native language(Worthington, 3). This shows that children’s abilities to speak, read, write and reason are influenced highly by how well they are taught to listen. As parents we can all be teachers to our children so that they can grow up to be well-rounded communicators.
1.1 People communicate by many ways including non-verbal highlighting facial expression, eye contact, body language, physical gestures such as touch, dress and behavior, along with verbal including tone and pitch of voice. The age and knowledge of a person one is communicating with, also dictates somewhat the amount of vocabulary i.e words and terms used too . People communicate to share ideas, information, educate, build relationships, express feelings and emotions, to be social, ask questions and expand their knowledge and share different experiences.
Dorothy Gronwall, a concussion specialist wrote in Cumulative and Persisting Effects of Concussion on Attention and Cognition, “After MHI (mild head injury), patients have difficulty in all areas that require them to analyze more items of information than they can handle simultaneously. They present as slow because it takes longer for smaller than normal chunks of information to be processed. They present as distractible because they do not have the spare capacity to monitor irrelevant stimuli at the same time as they are attending to the relevant stimulus. They present as forgetful because while they are concentrating on point A, they do not have the processing space to think about point B simultaneously. They present as inattentive because when the amount of information that they are given exceeds their capacities, they cannot take it all in.” All of these symptoms are permanent effects that a person can have after having only mild head injury. It is clear that it is important to take care of the injuries the correct
One effect a concussion can have on your head is the loss of memory. If you get hit in the head and you don’t remember what happened you are probably suffering a concussion and memory loss. Memory loss is not as bad as some of the things that happen when you get a concussion. Memory loss is not as common in not as bad concussions, but it can occur in mild or major concussions.
People communicate for many reasons, but I guess the main reasons are to get what we want, to refuse things we don’t, to give information or to find information and importantly to interact socially. We communicate to show pain, to show our emotions and express our feelings. We can communicate through speaking, touching, facial expressions and body movements. Through communication we build relationships.
To relay information thoughts or feelings using many different mediums such as body language, braille, pictures, eye contact or facial expressions. Within the non-verbal communication section it breaks down into many more
In a society it is essential to have effective communication skills, without those things can be very difficult. When you say communication people tend to generally just think about verbal communication and while speaking and listening is a large portion of what communication is it is a lot deeper than that and some people believe some of the other aspects like body language and facial expressions to be even more important in the maintaining of effective communication skills than forms of verbal communications.
There are eight key forms of nonverbal communications used on a daily basis. These forms can affect the way people view another person; however, without understanding the forms of nonverbal communication there is certain to be a lot of misinterpretations. Cultural and language differences are a common reason for miscommunication. When communicating with people in different cultures, a person should be extremely aware of the hand gestures and nonverbal communication tools they are using. Many of the hand gestures used in the United States that mean good things, mean offensive and profane things to other cultures. Nonverbal communication is described as body language, hand gestures, and facial expressions. It is known that people reveal more information through nonverbal communication, than words alone to get a point across. There will always be some interaction between two or more people that everyone’s
Communication is a two way process which allows us to express our thoughts and feelings to others, while allowing us in turn to understand what others are trying to convey to us. Communication involves speech and language (verbal) as well as facial expression, gesture and body language (non-verbal). Communication is an essential life skill for children and young people and it underpins their social, emotional and educational development. (Bercow 2008)
One type of communication is interpersonal, including in groups and face to face interactions. In every type of communication each person has both strengths and weaknesses. One of my strengths is I am good at starting conversations. On campus I work for SPiRiT, I work in the admissions office and help to give tours on weekdays and on event days on the weekends. Giving these tours I have to know how to talk to the students and their families. Also, when I am trying to befriend people if I want to I am good at finding conversation topics at picking up the conversation if it fades off. One of my interpersonal communication weaknesses is being able to put my opinion in. If I am in a big
Communication is one of the central building blocks of brain development. A child's ability to communicate begins at birth with crying. The more words an infant hears the more brain connections are made. Interaction is essential in order to master the skill of language.
One thing we all have in common is that we must all communicate in one form or another. Everyone communicates even if they know it or not. Both verbal and nonverbal communication is used during conversations. Using both forms helps convey and support the message you are trying to send.
