After the First World War country was united with other Slav territories to form Yugoslavia. At the time, the population of Bosnia consisted of over 1,300,000 Serbs which were Orthodox Catholic Christians, million Muslim Bosnians and around 700,000 of Croats. They all were strong attached to this land by the historical and local claims. After the death of Josip Broz Tito, elections in 1990 brought nationalists to power in Slovenia, Macedonia and Croatia, which declared independence in 1991 and were recognised internationally. The Leader of Bosnia’s, Alija Izetbegovic called for independence too, and the country was recognised as independent by the USA and the EU in 1992. However, Bosnia’s Serbs weren’t happy because they wanted to be part of “Greater Serbia”. a Serbian named Slobodan Milosevic, a former Communist responded to Bosnian’s declaration of independence by attacking and bombarding the capital city, Sarajevo. Serbs shot down civilians in the streets, including over 3,500 children.

By staying in college an athlete can grow, develop, and mature throughout the course of their years in college. The athletes brain is more developed. The athlete has a more mature, developed mindset that benefits the athlete by allowing them to see game plans in a different perspective and allows the athlete to face challenges with a clearer mind, because college has equipped them with more experience in tough situations. For example, Michael Jordan, also known as MJ, received a full athletic scholarship to North Carolina University in 1981. Jordan played for the North Carolina Tar Heels for 3 years. Although Jordan was drafted in the 1984 NBA draft, he was only a junior in college.

During this time, Civilians were forced to leave the only place they knew as home. As Serbian police force Albanians out of their homes, Priština, Kosovo’s capital is being drained of its ethnic identity. One refugee being forced to move to the Macedonia border said, “Then at two o’clock we were in the train. So many people it was difficult to survive. Very difficult. I thought I saw death with my eyes” (BBC news). These series of events depict the issues and struggles Albanians endure during the Kosovo War. Albanians fear is being able to create a safety environment for their own families. A main concern as well was if these Albanian families will ever return to their homes. The war for ethnic cleansing in Kosovo was already in progress. Furthermore, Serbians would also be put in a difficult decision, whether to end the war within Kosovo or to endure inescapable NATO air strikes.

Initially, Dragan feels as though the hospitals in Sarajevo cannot do much for the injured people. To demonstrate, Dragan criticizes Emina on her opinion of the hospital, “There’s not a whole lot the hospitals can do for you. They’re low on supplies, low on people” (124). Dragan is so hopeless that he gets enraged at one of his close friends, Emina. He believes that the medical care and swap team that Sarajevo relies on is absolutely useless because in his opinion risking your own life to save others is not worth it. Furthermore, Dragan believes that nobody will be able to leave Sarajevo. For instance, when he wants to get out of Sarajevo, he does not have a tunnel pass, “No one is getting out of town now. Certainly not him” (184). Dragan is so wretched that he believes no one can escape the deadly war. He even assumes that he will be stuck in Sarajevo without his family, and will end up dying before he sees them again. This impacts Dragan in a negative way because he feels that his wife will believe that he is dead and marry someone else. Finally, Dragan loses hope because he believes that nobody will come to help rescue the people of Sarajevo. To illustrate, Dragan harshly demolishes Emina’s hope, “‘No one is coming’. ‘His voice is harsher than he means it to be’. ‘We’re here on our own and no one is coming to help us. Don’t you know that?’” (86). Dragan loses his hope because he believes that the rest of Europe will not come to help the innocent people of Sarajevo. This is significant because Dragan knows that so far in the war the neighbouring countries have not come to help, resulting in him believing that they will not come at all. Emina feels as though they will be saved, but Dragan tries to diminish Emina’s hope of anyone actually coming to help. This is because all Dragan sees around him is his beloved city crumbling. On April 6,1992 the Bosnian War began,leading to the breakup of Yugoslavia. Serbian forces invaded Bosnia,throwing many people out of their homes and displacing them throughout the country. The actions of the soldiers traumatized the people of Bosnia in numerous ways, causing peril throughout the country.

The Yugoslav army was made up of Serbs, controlled by Milosevic. Croatia is where the first huge exterminations occurred shortly after they declared their independence from Yugoslavia. This resulted in hundreds of Croat men deceased. In 1992, Bosnia declared their independence from Yugoslavia. Bosnia was a majority Muslim population. Serbs believed that Muslims were an inferior race (Mike). Serbs placed Bosniak Muslims and Croats into concentration camps as a way to “Ethnically Cleanse” the nations. Two of the camps, Omarska and Keraterm, were places where killings, torture and brutal violence was happening. Another camp, Trnopolje, was a camp were mostly women, children, and elderly men were placed. This camp functioned as a staging area for rapes and massive killings.
