Chromosomes are structures within cells that contain genetic material (DNA) and are passed from parents to offspring during reproduction. They are made up of DNA tightly coiled around proteins called histones, and they are responsible for carrying the genetic information that determines an organism's traits and characteristics. Chromosomes come in pairs, with one member of each pair inherited from each parent. In eukaryotic cells, chromosomes are located in the nucleus, while in prokaryotic cells, they are located in the cytoplasm.
