An antibiotic that is used for the treatment of many bacterial infections is Chloramphenicol. The infections include conjunctivitis, meningitis, cholera, typhoid, etc. In treating conjunctivitis, chloramphenicol is used in the form of eye ointment while for treating other infections, it is used orally or through veins. Chloramphenicol has severe side effects also including bone marrow suppressions. Also, it stops the growth of bacteria by blocking protein production, so it comes under the broad-spectrum antibiotic category.
