Question

A medical researcher wishes to see if he can lower the cholesteral levels through diet in 6 people by showing a film about the effects of high cholesteral levels. The data are shown. At a=0.10, did the cholesteral level decrease on average?

PATIENT 1 2 3 4 5 6
BEFORE 235 219 202 216 212 212
AFTER 205 219 200 214 211 210

Find the critical values. Round the answer to at least three decimal places. If there is more than one critcal value, seperate them with commas.

Compute the test value. Round the answer to at least three decimal places.

Do we reject or not reject the null hypothesis?

Expert Solution
Step 1 : Hypotheses information.

Claim : The cholesterol level decrease on average.

The null and alternative hypotheses are as follows;

Ho : µ≥ 0.

Ha : µ< 0.

Where D is difference between two paired sample i.e. before and after.

Since we have less than inequality in alternative hypotheses so it is Left-tailed test.

Here given data is paired with observation in before and after that is here we compare the means of two related groups so we will run use Paired t test here.

The given level of significance = 0.10.

Step 2 : Critical value.

To find P-value we need to know the following things:

1) Degree's of freedom = n-1  = 6-1=5.

2) Level of significance , α = 0.10

Since this is Left tailed test so find p-value for left tailed test.

It can be easily found using MS-Excel.

The function to find Critical-value in excel is as follows;

=TINV(2*α , deg_freedom ).

Therefore , to get a critical value please type =tinv( 2*0.1, 5) in an empty cell and press ENTER.

The critical value would be  1.475884 and till 3 decimal point , it would be 1.476.

Thus , the critical value is 1.746.
