Question

A unicorn is 10 meters away from a lens with focal length 2 meters. The image is (real/virtual)  and the orientation is (upright/inverted)  .

Expert Solution
Step 1

Given,

Distance of object, do= -10 m
(negative  sign indicates that the object is to the left side of the lens)

and

focal length, f= +2m.
(Convergent lens has positive focal length)

Step 2

Using the lens formula we get,

1f=1di - 1do1di=1f+1do=12 m+1-10 m=-10 +2-20 m=820 mdi=20 m8=+2.5 m

We see that the object was at -10 cm, and the image is +2.5 cm
hence the image is on the right side of the lens and the object is to the left of the lens.
Hence, the image is real.

Magnification is given by,

m=dido=2.5 m-10 m=-0.25

As, m<0, hence the image is inverted.
