In order to write the IUPAC name of a Newman projection of a compound, follow these steps given below.

  1. Convert the Newman projection to Sawhorse projection and then to Fischer projection to get the clear view of the compound.
  2. Identify the long carbon chain which contains maximum number of carbons.
  3. Put number to the carbon chain such that the substituents follow the lowest locant rule that is, the sum of the number of carbon to which substituents are attached must be the lowest.
  4. Then, use meth-, eth-, prop- to name the carbon chain according to the number of carbons in the chain.
  5. Use -ane as prefix, if the carbon chain contains only single bonds, -ene if the carbon chain contains one or more double bonds and -yne if the carbon chain contains one or more triple bonds.
