Expert Solution
Sources of power
Power refers to the holding of authority and the ability to influence others. The following are five sources of power:
- Reward power: Rewarding an employee acts as a sense of motivation, but rewarding the employees in a manner that drives them more motivated to work would be called as one source of power. Rewarding for the tasks they had done might motivate them, but providing them with the opportunity of leaving work early will be the power of reward.
- Coercive power: Coercion refers to the process of pursuing someone to do something forcefully which they are not likely to do. Coercion in an organization refers to the process where employer threatens some disciplinary action when the employee refuses to perform the given task. So in order to avoid this punishment employee tries to work hard to complete the given task.
- Legitimate power: Legitimate power refers to the power given for the position he holds. Manager in organization has the legitimate power among the subordinates because they directly report him. It is treated as an act of authority.
- Expert power: Expert power refers to the power of experience and knowledge the person carries. Expert power does not require a management title or a position of leadership to effectively influence the people around you.
- Referent power: Referent power means the act of admiring someone or relating to someone which leads to a desire to earn his approval. In organization, the leaders try to influence the follower's admiration and respect so that they consider them as their role models and perform efficiently.
