Explain Primary production.

Expert Solution
Step 1

Plants are the autotrophs and primary producers in the food chain. Plants leaves contain Chrolorophyll a green pigment which involves in photosynthesize process. Plants and trees prevent soil erosion.

Step 2

Primary production: In an ecosystem the conversion of light energy (solar energy) into chemical energy (synthesis of organic compound) utilising atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2). It basically happens through the process of photosynthesis, in which the light as a source of energy trap by the photosynthetic organism utilise them for oxidation and reduction of chemical compounds. The organism directly involves in primary production are known as primary producer or autotrophs. The complete lives in the universe depend on this primary producer. Mainly the plants (in the terrestrial ecosystem) and algae (aquatic ecosystem) are predominantly known as the primary producer. The total production by the primary producer of an ecosystem is known as gross primary production (GPP). Some of the produced energy utilised by producer itself for its life remaining are available for consumers called Net primary production (NPP = GPP-Respiration of producer).
