Explain why cationic polymerization is an effective method of polymerizing CH2 = C(CH3)2 but not CH2 = CH2.

One type of chain growth polymerization process is cationic polymerization. It involves electrophilic addition in which carbocation is formed.

The cationic polymerization is favored by stabilization of carbocation intermediate by preferably transferring groups present in monomer which actually facilitates the reaction.

Observing the given CH2=C(CH3)2 structure shows that the carbocation intermediate formed for cationic polymerization is tertiary carbocation.
