Secant formula is used to calculate buckling load in columns. In Euler formula we assume that the load acts on the column through the centroid of the column however this is not true always. The load can sometimes be acting at some distance from the centroid or the column may not be straight.

Therefore to account for this we assume that the load is acting at certain distance (e) away from the centroid. The formula which takes into account the eccentricity of the load is secant formula.
