Give a mechanism, showing chain branching during the free-radical polymerization of styrene. There are two types of aliphatic hydrogens in the polystyrene chain. Which type is more likely to be abstracted?
Give a mechanism, showing chain branching during the free-radical
The product formed in the reaction depends upon the stability of radicals formed in the polymerisation reaction which favours the electron flow and the reaction proceeds to form products.
Benzoyl peroxide acts as initiator in the polymerisation of styrene which initiates polymerisation via the formation of benzyl radical. Benzyl radical reacts with styrene molecule and initiates polymerisation in the styrene molecule. This polymerisation continues till any group is added to the other end of polymer chain at which radical is getting formed.
