Question

How many grams of oxygen would be produced from 37.4g Na2CO3?

digit _____  (your answer should not be in scientific notation)

unit  _____

Expert Solution
Data given:

When Sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), i.e. washing soda is heated to 500 oC, it decomposes to form sodium oxide and carbon dioxide.

The balanced chemical reaction is as follows:

Na2CONa2O(s) + CO2 (g)

Mass of Na2CO = 37.4 g

Molar mass of Na2CO = no. of Na×mass of one sodium+ no. of carbon×mass of one carbon+ no.of oxygen×mass of one oxygen

Molar mass of Na2CO3 = (2×23+1×12 +3×16) g mol-1 = 106 g mol-1
