How to respond to this in 100 words?  According to Meyer (2014), a labor union is an organization dedicated to representing the interests of workers in a particular industry or group of industries. Since the emergence of labor unions in the 1700s these entities have been influential in advocating for and protecting employees. Labor unions have many roles and responsibilities. One must understand that once employees vote to unionize, the labor union serves as their official representative. On behalf of the unionized employees, the labor union collectively bargains or attempts to negotiate a new labor contract with employers (Holley et al., 2017). The labor union sheds light on and resolves issues that cause conflict between employees and the employer such as wages, workplace safety, and employee benefits. The functions and responsibilities of the labor union are undoubtedly vital to those that choose to unionize.             It is no secret that there are many different opinions on whether the labor union is a positive influence in the workplace. Like everything, labor unions come with advantages and disadvantages. A clear advantage is that labor unions promote ethical and fair workplaces. Labor unions seek to ensure that employees voices are heard and that positive changes take place. Labor unions can also directly benefit employers by reducing turnover, increasing sales, and increasing employee education and training (Burton III, 2017). Opponents of labor unions often bring to light the disadvantages of heightened costs for employers, intensive administrative work, and the greater likelihood of work stoppages. Despite the disadvantages, the author feels that labor unions can be an overall positive influence on the workplace if managed properly.
