I believe that there are many good things that can come out of people getting to design their baby’s genetic material. But there are also many bad things as well. From the article by Bio medical about the pros and cons of having a designer baby it states that a pro is that this type of engineering can “ might help prevent genetic diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s Disease, down syndrome, Spinal Muscular Atrophy, and many others”. I think that it is great that we could get rid of Alzheimer’s due to how destructive it can be to the people that suffer it. But I think the other diseases that it can eliminate is horrible due to them making our world a more unique place such as people with autism, Down syndrome. By doing this it could eliminate the whole population of people with disabilities community and make everyone “normal”. Another bad that I found in the article Ethics of designer babies which states that a major flaw for these babies is “designer baby technologies suggest that parents already possess a high degree of control over the outcome of their children’s lives in the form of environmental choices, and that this should absolve some of the ethical concerns facing genetic selection. For example, parents keen on establishing musical appreciation in their children may sign them up for music classes or take them to concerts on a regular basis”. I think that a lot of parents do this to high degree with their children by pushing them to participate in a sport, Musical instruments ect. Already but if the parents pre programmed them to like certain things that takes the child’s ability to explore and build their own things based on what the freedom of what they choose. Which I would give that to him as children and becoming adults in the future. Lastly to end it on a positive note I think that altering the genetic material can have a positive impact from the bio medical article “By editing out an unborn baby’s defective genes and only retaining the healthy genes, the baby will grow up healthier. Therefore, you may increase their overall life expectancy by up to 30 years”. I think this is a positive due to humans being able to live longer by not developing cancers and diseases by environmental factors such as their parents had diabetes and the child doesn't due to the parents designing the baby. This could provide humans a longer and more sanctified life to live to the end of their time. Overall I believe this technology should be controlled but would still be able to use for people that wouldn’t take this tech for granted. I believe that if this technology went into the wrong hands that they could abuse this power of technology and create something that would be very harmful to society.
