Question

In compressing the spring in a toy dart gun, 0.9 J of work is done. When the gun is fired, the spring gives its potential energy to a dart with a mass of 0.05 kg.

(a) What is the dart's kinetic energy as it leaves the gun?
 J

(b) What is the dart's speed?
 m/s
Expert Solution
Step 1 :Introduction

According to the law of conservation of energy , energy can neither be created nor destroyed but can  only be converted from one form to another . Thus when the dart is released , the kinetic energy used by the dart is produced from the potential energy of the spring . Thus the kinetic energy of the dart will be E=0.9 J .

The kinetic energy of dart is calculated by using the formula E=12mv2 , where is the mass and is the velocity of the object .
