Question

In order to complete the quantum mechanical picture, a 4th quantum number called the spin quantum number ms is necessary. What does the Pauli exclusion principle tell us in reference to ms?

check_circleAnswer
Step 1

Spin quantum number is related to the spin of an electron.

An electron assumed to be spinning clockwise is assigned a value of + 1/2 as the spin quantum number and an electron assumed to be spinning anti-clockwise is assigned a value of - 1/2 as its spin quantum number.

Step 2

According to Pauli's esclusion principle, " no two electrons can have all four quantum numbers same".

Since, an orbital can have a maximum of two electrons, the two electrons have the same values of principal qua...
