By design, this POE is intended to awaken your inner creativity! You will walk the journey of an entrepreneur. Starting with nothing other than a problem, by the end of this POE you will have an entrepreneurial idea to solve the problem and a business plan that you can present to potential investors to kick-start your business. We have provided you with selected areas of development/themes as per the National Development Plan. Consider any one of the areas/themes provided, with the view of coming up with a creative, realistic and innovative idea to help address a problem associated with your chosen area/theme. The areas/themes provided below are quite broad and requires you to do some research before identifying an angle that you would take on. For example, “Improving Education, Training and Innovation” (theme two), concerns several aspects such as early childhood development, further education and training and higher education. Similarly, “Promoting Health” (theme three) extends beyond medical issues and relates to various aspects such as promoting healthy behaviours, lifestyles and human capacity (e.g., community health workers). As such, there are several problems that could be related to a specific theme. This is just to give you an idea of how broad the areas/themes are, and the reality is that your solution will not erase a problem altogether, but it should contribute to addressing the problem and possibly contributing to South Africa’s National Development Plan. Think carefully about the theme, chat to your lecturer for guidance if you are unsure about the angle you’re taking. It is important that your entrepreneurial idea/venture is linked to one of the areas/themes identified below. It would be ideal to select an area/theme that relates to something you have passion for, or you are knowledgeable about. When thinking of possible solutions, do research and speak to people. In most cases, asking questions is a great source of new ideas. In addition to asking questions, consider alternatives to current/existing solutions. South Africa belongs to all its people and the future of our country is our collective future. Making it work at is our collective responsibility. All South Africans seek a better future for themselves and their children. The National Development Plan is a plan for the country to eliminate poverty and reduce inequality by 2030 through uniting South Africans, unleashing the energies of its citizens, growing an inclusive economy, building capabilities, enhancing the capability of the state and leaders working together to solve complex problems. This is a plan for South Africa, requiring action, change and sacrifice from all sectors of society. The plan is the product of hundreds of interactions with South Africans, input from tens of thousands of people, extensive research and robust debate throughout the country.\ In view of the above extract from the National Development Plan, there is a need for and importance of entrepreneurship as a source to solve societal challenges. As an entrepreneurship student, you have been approached by the National Planning Commission to consider any one of the following areas/themes, with the view of coming up with a creative, realistic and innovative idea to help address a problem associated with your chosen area/theme. Think about a feasible business idea that will address the problem/challenge identified from your chosen area/theme. These areas/themes relate to the National Development Plan. 1.
