so the signal for a particular C shown by the number of Hs attached per carbon in accordance with the n+1 rule( spin multiplicity rule).

where n= number of Hs attached with the Carbon atom.

So, for example, a -CH3 shows as a quartet ( 3+1=4)and a -CH2- as a triplet( 2+1=3).
