The two ways axial stress can be applied are:

Application of dead weight:.

The dead weight are applied on the ram in equal increments until the specimen  fails. The dead weight comes in different range ranging from 5 lb to 100 lb and more.

The weight is applied gradually and the axial deformation is measured with the help of a ring or load cell attached to the ram.

 

Application by hydraulic loading press.

The hydraulic loading press applies in the load on the ram and is increased in equal increments and the axial deformation resulting from the applied load is measured with the help of a dial gauge.
