GDP numbers from the EU in the morning showed that many
countries were back in contraction in the final quarter of last
year. Countries that are dependent on tourism saw overall a
bigger slump, although Spain was able to defy expectations for
a fall and grew 0.4%. The French economy shrunk by 1.3%, but the
hardest hit country was Austria (- 4.3%) a, as the start of winter
tourism season fell flat.
While the coronavirus situation improves in the UK, I expect
the harsh restrictions to at least last till mid-February and
more likely till the end of Q1 2021, resulting in a recession of
the UK economy.
Canadian GDP figures for November came in better than
expected (+ 0.7% vs. + 0.4% MOM) which shows that the
Canadian economy is dealing with the pandemic better
than its big brother the US and Europe.
Saudi Arabia will cut 1 million bpd of its oil production over
the next two months.
