Question

Solve the following using Charles’ Law Equation.

A tank (not rigid) contains 2.3 Liter of Helium gas at 250C. What will be the final volume ( V2 ) of the tank
after heating it and its content to 400C temperature at constant pressure?

CHARLES' LAW states that at constant pressure, the volume of a fixed amount of gas is directly proportional
to the Kelvin ( K) temperature. If the temperature increases/decreases, volume also increases / decreases,
V = kT ork = V/ T. In equation, k = V1/T1 and k = V2/ T2 so, V1/ T1 = V2/ T2 or
V1 T2 = V2 T1
Sample Problem:
At 20°C, the volume of chlorine gas is 15 L. Compute for the resulting volume ( V2 ) if the temperature is
adjusted to 318 K provided that the pressure remains the same.
Given : T1 = 20°C + 273 = 293K
Formula : V2 = V, T2 + T1
Solution : V2 = ( 15 L ) ( 318 K ) + 293 K
V: = 15 L
T2 = 318 K Unknown : V2 = ?
Answer : V2 = 16.3 L
