- The Tinkan Company produces one-pound cans for the Canadian salmon industry. Each year the salmon spawn during a 24-hour period and must be canned immediately. Tinkan has the following agreement with the salmon industry. The company can deliver as many cans as it chooses. Then the salmon are caught. For each can by which Tinkan falls short of the salmon industrys needs, the company pays the industry a 2 penalty. Cans cost Tinkan 1 to produce and are sold by Tinkan for 2 per can. If any cans are left over, they are returned to Tinkan and the company reimburses the industry 2 for each extra can. These extra cans are put in storage for next year. Each year a can is held in storage, a carrying cost equal to 20% of the cans production cost is incurred. It is well known that the number of salmon harvested during a year is strongly related to the number of salmon harvested the previous year. In fact, using past data, Tinkan estimates that the harvest size in year t, Ht (measured in the number of cans required), is related to the harvest size in the previous year, Ht1, by the equation Ht = Ht1et where et is normally distributed with mean 1.02 and standard deviation 0.10. Tinkan plans to use the following production strategy. For some value of x, it produces enough cans at the beginning of year t to bring its inventory up to x+Ht, where Ht is the predicted harvest size in year t. Then it delivers these cans to the salmon industry. For example, if it uses x = 100,000, the predicted harvest size is 500,000 cans, and 80,000 cans are already in inventory, then Tinkan produces and delivers 520,000 cans. Given that the harvest size for the previous year was 550,000 cans, use simulation to help Tinkan develop a production strategy that maximizes its expected profit over the next 20 years. Assume that the company begins year 1 with an initial inventory of 300,000 cans.Scenario 3 Ben Gibson, the purchasing manager at Coastal Products, was reviewing purchasing expenditures for packaging materials with Jeff Joyner. Ben was particularly disturbed about the amount spent on corrugated boxes purchased from Southeastern Corrugated. Ben said, I dont like the salesman from that company. He comes around here acting like he owns the place. He loves to tell us about his fancy car, house, and vacations. It seems to me he must be making too much money off of us! Jeff responded that he heard Southeastern Corrugated was going to ask for a price increase to cover the rising costs of raw material paper stock. Jeff further stated that Southeastern would probably ask for more than what was justified simply from rising paper stock costs. After the meeting, Ben decided he had heard enough. After all, he prided himself on being a results-oriented manager. There was no way he was going to allow that salesman to keep taking advantage of Coastal Products. Ben called Jeff and told him it was time to rebid the corrugated contract before Southeastern came in with a price increase request. Who did Jeff know that might be interested in the business? Jeff replied he had several companies in mind to include in the bidding process. These companies would surely come in at a lower price, partly because they used lower-grade boxes that would probably work well enough in Coastal Products process. Jeff also explained that these suppliers were not serious contenders for the business. Their purpose was to create competition with the bids. Ben told Jeff to make sure that Southeastern was well aware that these new suppliers were bidding on the contract. He also said to make sure the suppliers knew that price was going to be the determining factor in this quote, because he considered corrugated boxes to be a standard industry item. Is Ben Gibson acting legally? Is he acting ethically? Why or why not?Scenario 3 Ben Gibson, the purchasing manager at Coastal Products, was reviewing purchasing expenditures for packaging materials with Jeff Joyner. - Assume the demand for a companys drug Wozac during the current year is 50,000, and assume demand will grow at 5% a year. If the company builds a plant that can produce x units of Wozac per year, it will cost 16x. Each unit of Wozac is sold for 3. Each unit of Wozac produced incurs a variable production cost of 0.20. It costs 0.40 per year to operate a unit of capacity. Determine how large a Wozac plant the company should build to maximize its expected profit over the next 10 years.Pricing Decisions at Madison The Madison Company manufactures and retails a certain product. The company wants to determine the price that maximizes its profit from this product. The unit cost of producing and marketing the product is 50. Madison will certainly charge at least 50 for the product to ensure that it makes some profit. However, there is a very competitive market for this product, so that Madisons demand falls sharply when it increases its price. How should the company proceed?2 In the pricing model in Example 7.1 with the constant elasticity demand function, the assumption is that all units demanded are sold. Suppose the company has the capacity to produce only 200 units. If demand is less than capacity, all of demand is sold. If demand is greater than or equal to capacity, only 200 units are sold. Use Solver to find the optimal price and the corresponding profit. Then use SolverTable to see how sensitive these answers are to the production capacity, letting it vary from 170 to 230 in increments of 10. Discuss your findings relative to the original solution in Example 7.1. In other words, what is the effect of capacity on the optimal price and profit?Using method 1 (combined depreciation and investment cost) determine the probable cost per hour of owning and operating a caterpillar that uses rubber tires. The equipment is a 185-hp diesel engine and the following conditions apply. To entice customers to spend more he has recently launched store credit, subject to approval. Which one of the following is a cost of granting credit that Paul must be aware of? Select one: a. Loss of interest b. Insurance cost c. The loss of customer goodwill d. Loss of flexibilityABC Corporation has recently given out a nine-month contract to a construction subcontractor. At the end of the first month, it becomes obvious that the subcontractor is not reporting costs according to an appropriate WBS level. ABC Corporation asks the subcontractor to change its cost reporting procedures. The subcontractor states that this cannot be done without additional funding. This problem has occurred with other subcontractors as well. What can ABC Corporation do about this?a ABC company purchased a machine use to their business whose first cost is P 500,000 with an estimated life of 10 years. The estimated salvage value of the equipment at the end of its lifetime is P 25,000. Determine the depreciation charge and book value at the end of various years using the straight line method of depreciation.
- An investor has patented a new device, and a bank is willing to lend the money to manufacture the device. Preliminary investigation establishes a suitable planning period of 5 years for the comparison of payoffs from this invention. According to the investor’s analysis, profit of $800,000 can be anticipated over the next 5 years if sales are strong; if sales are average, the investor can expect to make $200,000; and if sales are week, the investor expects to loss $50,000. Nationwide Enterprises, Inc. has offered to purchase the patent rights. Based on royalty arrangement, the inventor estimates that selling the patent rights may well bring a net profit of $400,000 if sales are strong, $70,000 if sales are average and $10,000 if sales are week. On the basis of extensive investigation of past experience with similar devices, the investor assigns the probabilities for strong, average, and week sales to be 0.2, 0.5, and 0.3 respectively. 1. She continually monitors her other expense costs, including the cost of liability insurance for drivers of her catering vans. This year, Hyewon’s auto insurer advises her that insurance rates for her coverage will increase by 15 percent next year. The insurance company also states that if Hyewon will institute a preemployment drug-testing program for those employees who will drive her vans, there will be no insurance rate increase. Hyewon does not currently require potential employees to agree to be drug-tested prior to becoming employed in her business, but it is legal to do so in her state. What should Hyewon tell potential employees about her reason for implementing a preemployment drug-testing program? What should she do if a potential employee refuses to agree to the test? When SS Electroplating Company started the electroplating operations in a residential location in Bengaluru, it received a notice from the pollution Control Board to install the effluent treatment plant within 15 days, failing which they would seal the plant. The Director of the company collected the information that it would cost about 10,00,000 to buy an effluent treatment plant, an area of about 600 sq.feet to install it over a period of 2-3 months, & running cost of about 40,000 per month for the purchase of material like costic soda & others. The effluent contained nickel, synide, cromium, cadminum & zinc, which were to be treated separately using different chemicals. After effluent liquid of about 800 litres per day was treated, the sludge was to be dried, packed, stored & dumped in a government notified place.
