Question

What are tangent modules?

Expert Solution
Step 1

The slope of the stress strain curve up to the elastic limit is called the tangent modulus for a given value of stress and strain. The tangent modulus is equialently equal to Young's Modulus. It is constant up to the proportional limit. When plastic deformation starts tangent modulus changes from point to point.

Young's modulus is greater than tangent modulus at point A. Tangent modulus is used for describing stiffness of the material above the elastic range and can be denoted as Et.
