Pyruvate produced after glycolysis undergoes oxidation to acquire energy as ATP. This oxidation of pyruvate in eukaryotes takes place inside the cell in mitochondria whereas in case of prokaryotes it occurs in cytoplasm.

Oxidation coverts the pyruvate into a two carbon molecule acetyl-CoA by producing NADH and CO2 as shown below.
