What is Bronsted acidity? Draw a picture to explain it.How is it measured?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Bronsted acidity of any molecule is defined as the tendency of any acid to release H+ ions in the solution.

More is the tendency of an acid to release H+ ions in the solution, more is the Bronsted acidity of the acid.

Step 2

For example, HCl and CH3COOH

Since HCl is a strong acid.

Hence it dissociates completely in the solution producing H+ ions as

HCl ------> H+ + Cl-                                             ( complete dissociation)

But since CH3COOH is a weak acid. Hence it dissociate partially as

CH3COOH -------> CH3COO- + H+                     ( partial dissociation)

Hence for the same concentration of HCl and CH3COOH, HCl has more tendency to release H+ ions in the solution compared to CH3COOH.

Hence the  Bronsted acidity of HCl is more than that of CH3COOH.
