What is gap graded soil?

A Gap graded soil is such a soil which lacks a few sieve sizes in between the standard size distribution. This type of soil is in the category of poorly graded soil. The particles sizes mainly within the range sieve size number 10 and sieve size number 40 are absent.

The variation could be explained in terms of the parameters such as the coefficient of uniformity Cu and the coefficient of curvature CC which are used to classify the soils as well graded and poorly graded. Therefore, for well graded gravel the value coefficient of uniformity Cu has to be greater than 4 and respectively the value of the coefficient of curvature CC should lie between 1 and 3, if not so then the soil is declared as poorly graded.

Similarly, for well graded sand the value coefficient of uniformity Cu has to be greater than 6 and respectively the value of the coefficient of curvature CC should lie between 1 and 3, otherwise it is poorly graded.
