Friction is a force that comes into existence when there is relative motion between two bodies, or there is a tendency of relative motion between two bodies.

The cause of friction can be mainly attributed to the surface roughness and the force of adhesion between the two surfaces.

Due to surface roughness, the irregularities on the surface get locked with one another. This interlocking resists any relative motion of bodies. Another factor is the force of adhesion which exists between molecules of the dissimilar substance. Hence two surfaces in contact get loosely bonded due to adhesion and thus resist any relative motion.
