What is the difference between a covalent bond and an ionic bond?

Ionic bond is formed by the complete transfer of valence electron(s) between atoms. It is a type of chemical bond that generates two oppositely charged ions. In ionic bonds, the metal loses electrons to become a positively charged cation, whereas the non-metal accepts those electrons to become a negatively charged anion.

For example, NaCl. Na transfers its one valence electron (becoming Na+) to the valence shell of Cl (becoming Cl-), forming ionic bond between them. This is represented as:
