Introduction:

Wohl degradation method: Wohl degradation is a mechanism to cut or shorten the chain length in aldoses. The degradation of aldohexose form an aldopentose by cleavage at C-1 and C-2 carbon atom. In presence of hydroxylamine and acetic acid, it form a cyanohydrin adduct and after hydrolysis form 5 carbon unit aldopentose.
