A 7.00-L vessel contains 3.50 moles of ideal gas at a pressure of 1.60 × 106 Pa. Find (a) the temperature of the gas and (b) the average kinetic energy of a gas molecule in the vessel. (c) What additional information would you need if you were asked to find the average speed of a gas molecule?

Explanation

Given info: Volume of the vessel (V) is 7.00 L. Number of moles of gas is 3.50 mol.  The pressure of the gas (P) is 1.60×106Pa .

From Ideal gas equation, the temperature is,

T=PVnR

• R is the gas constant.

Substitute 7.00 L for V, 3.50 mol for n, 1.60×106Pa for P and 8.31Jmol1K1 for R in the above equation to get T.

T=(1.60×106Pa)(7.00L)(3
