Duchenne muscular dystrophy, which is inherited in an X-linked recessive pattern, nearly always occurs in males. Explain why.

Summary Introduction

To explain: Duchenne muscular dystrophy nearly occurs in males.

Introduction:

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a genetic disorder caused by dystrophin gene mutation. It is located on the X chromosome. Dystrophin protein is found in skeletal and cardiac muscles; they provide strength to muscle fibers and connect cytoplasm in muscle cells to the extracellular matrix. The mutation in the gene results in defective dystrophin protein causing muscle degeneration. DMD is a recessive X-linked condition.

Explanation of Solution

The genes responsible for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) are located on the X chromosome. Males have one X chromosome, and females have two X chromosomes. If females carry a mutated gene on one of her X chromosome, she will be a carrier. It means that she will not have DMD but she can pass the mutated gene to 50 percent of her children...
