Textbook Problem

What is the pH of a buffer solution that is 0.15 M pyridine and 0.10 M pyridinium bromide?

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The pH of a buffer solution that is 0.15 M pyridine and 0.10 M pyridinium bromide has to be calculated.

Concept Introduction:

The pH can be calculated using Henderson-Hasselbalch equation as follows,

pH = pKa + log[conjugate base][weak acid]pH = pKa + log[A-][HA]

Relationship between Ka and Kb

Ka×Kb=Kw

To Calculate: The pH of a buffer solution that is 0.15 M pyridine and 0.10 M pyridinium bromide

Explanation

Given data:

The concentration of pyridine = 0.15 M

The concentration of pyridinium bromide = 0.10 M

Calculation of pH:

Calculate the Ka of the pyridinium ion from the Kb of pyridine.

The Kb of pyridine is 1.4×109

Ka =KwKb =1.0×10141.4×109 =7.14×106

We know that,

pKa = -log Ka

The Ka for pyridinium ion is 7
