VSEPR theory is helpful in predicting the shapes of molecules from their Lewis structures. The geometry of a molecule can be determined on the basis of the number of electron groups, lone pairs and bonding pairs in the molecule.

Explanation of Solution

a) OF2

The total number of electron pairs in OF2 is four. The number of bonding pairs is two and the number of non-bonding pairs is also two. But, in this structure, two of the electron pairs are the lone pairs. So, the molecular geometry becomes bent.

Hence, the molecular geometry is bent.

b) NI3

The total number of electron pairs in NI3 is four, out of which three are bonding pairs and one is a non-bonding pair. But since one of the pairs is a lone pair, the molecular geometry becomes pyramidal.

Hence, the molecular geometry is pyramidal
