Describe nuclear fission, and write a nuclear equation to describe the fission of U-235.

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

Nuclear fission is to be described and a nuclear reaction that describes the fission of U-235 is to be written.

Concept Introduction:

The splitting of a nucleus into smaller nuclei is accompanied by tremendous energy release.

Explanation of Solution

The phenomenon of the splitting of the nucleus of an atom is referred to as nuclear fission. U-235 splitting leads to the enormous generation of energy along with broken smaller parts, such as barium, krypton, and 3 neutrons. The 3 neutrons produced induce the fission of other U-235 nuclei and it produces a chain-reaction (self-amplifying).

The reaction involved in the nuclear fission of U-235 is as follows:

U92235+
