The Lewis structure of hydroxylamine H2NOH has to be drawn. The hybridization for nitrogen and oxygen in this molecule and the orbitals overlap to form the bond between nitrogen and oxygen should be determined.

Concept Introduction:

  • Lewis structures are diagrams that represent the chemical bonding of covalently bonded molecules and coordination compounds.
  • It is also known as Lewis dot structures which represent the bonding between atoms of a molecule and the lone pairs of electrons that may exist in the molecule.
  • The Lewis structure is based on the concept of the octet rule so that the electrons shared in each atom should have 8 electrons in its outer shell.

Hybridization is the process of mixing of atomic orbitals into new hybrid orbitals. The hybrid orbitals have different energies and shape than the component atomic orbitals.

Important types of hybridizations are listed below,

sp3hybridization: It is the combination of 1-s and 3-p orbitals and thus 4sp3 hybrid orbitals are produced. Single bonds are always having this type of hybridization.

sp2hybridization: It is the combination of 1-s and 2-p orbitals and thus 3sp2 hybrid orbitals are produced. Single bonds are always having this type of hybridization.

Explanation of Solution

The numbers of valence electrons in nitrogen and oxygen atom are 5and7 respectively.

Herein the given compound hydroxylamine, the nitrogen bonded with oxygen atom. Two hydrogen atoms were attached to the nitrogen atom and a hydrogen atom was bonded to the oxygen atom.

The non-bonded electrons are considered as lone pair of electron. Here the nitrogen and oxygen atoms have lone pair of electrons.
